GA, BHS students
named 2019 Georgia
Scholars
Jonathon Kirkland and Morgan
Dunn, both of Brunswick High, and
Dylan Sasser, of Glynn Academy, were
named 2019 Georgia Scholars by State
School Superintendent Richard Woods.
Approximately 260 graduating se
niors were recognized as 2019 Georgia
Scholars.
Through the Georgia Scholar pro
gram, the Georgia Department of
Education (GaDOE) identifies and
honors high school seniors who have
achieved excellence in school and com
munity life. Students eligible for Geor
gia Scholar recognition are high school
seniors who exhibit excellence in all
phases of school life, in community ac
tivities, and in the home.
“We are extremely proud of these
students for their outstanding work in
the classroom and beyond,” said Virgil
Cole, Superintendent of Glynn County
Schools. “Their willingness to go the
extra mile in our community has not
gone unnoticed and we commend them
for upholding the principles and values
of public service. We wish them well as
they embark on their next steps after
high school.”
Georgia Scholars are students who
have carried exemplary course loads
during their four years of high school;
who performed excellently in all cours
es; who successfully participated in
interscholastic events at their schools
and in their communities; and who
have assumed active roles in extracur
ricular activities sponsored by their
schools.
“The 2019 Georgia Scholars exem
plify our mission of educating the whole
child,” State Superintendent Woods
said in a press release. “They are well-
rounded students who have engaged
with a wide array of educational op
portunities - from traditional class
room learning to community service.
I congratulate each of these students
and wish them well as they embark on
their next steps after high school.”
The program is coordinated by
GaDOE’s Excellence Recognition of
fice and through local coordinators in
each public school system and private
schools throughout the state. The rec
ognition is open to any student who
qualifies and if chosen, each Georgia
Scholar receives a seal for his or her
diploma.

St. Simons Kung Fu Blueberries win
GRPA District 2 Championship
The St. Simons “Kung-Fu Blueberries” of the Glynn County Parks and Recreation Department won the Georgia Recreation
and Parks Association (GRPA) 8U District 2 Championship last weekend in Jesup. The Kung-Fu Blueberries dominated the
tournament with a 4-1 record, out scoring their opponents 97-44. The GRPA Class A/B State Tournament starts Tuesday in
Savannah and goes through June 27.
