Permar Glynn County’s SPLOST 2016 Citizen’s Oversight Committee (SCOC) got up dates from the county, City of Brunswick, Jekyll Island Au thority, and Joint Water and Sewer Commission during the meeting last week (Wed. Oct. 23). Two county projects of sig nificant interest were the road improvements at the intersec tion of King’s Way and Fred erica Rd. on St. Simons Island and the proposed new Animal Control facility at the Public Safety Complex off of SPUR 25. According to County Public Works Director Dave Austin, the intersection of Frederica Rd. and King’s Way is still on hold waiting for a final deci sion by the County Board of Commissioners (BOC). Permar What has become a some what controversial road proj ect, the roundabout at the intersection of the East Beach Causeway and Ocean Blvd. on St. Simons, is set to be com pleted on schedule before the Georgia / Florida game this weekend. Last Friday workers for the contractor, Curb and Gut ter Professionals (CGP), were laying out the temporary road striping and building the frames in preparation to pour two of the four “splitter islands.” Splitter islands sepa rate the traffic that is going straight from the traffic that is turning. Grant carried 20 times for 96 yards and scored a go- ahead touchdown on a 6-yard run for Glynn in the fourth quarter that made it 21-14 in favor of the Terrors. The small but quick run ning back also came up big for Glynn on its game-winning drive after the Pirates tied the score at 21-all. Grant car ried four straight times for 17 yards on the drive before turn ing a short pass into a 26-yard gain to the Brunswick 23-yard line on a third-down play that gave Glynn a new set of downs. Shortly thereafter, Glynn called timeout with three sec onds left from the Brunswick 9 to set up a 26-yard field goal by senior Chase Gabriel to win the game. Gabriel’s kick was right down the heart as the fi nal seconds ticked off the clock and the Terrors stormed the field in jubilation. “He’s clutch,” Grant said of his classmate Gabriel. Grant is big-time, too, ac cording to GA head coach Rocky Hidalgo. “The guy is the consummate team player,” Coach Rock not ed. “He could carry 40 times or three. It doesn’t matter as long as we win. He’s tough as nails, everything you want in a high school football player.” Glynn topped the Pirates a sixth time in a row to tie the longest winning streak in the series which the Pirates ac complished first in the late 1990s. Grant became the fifth straight Glynn player to win the Player of the Game award which the Hall of Fame first presented in 2015. Grant is also the fourth GA running back for the run-heavy Terrors to win the honor. Grant said he loved having his number called so many times on that final drive for the game-winning kick. “It felt great. It was great to be trusted like that,” he said. Also after the game, Gabri el received the Farm Bureau Player of the Game. “I love that kid. He’s great,” Grant said. Kicking off Tuesday of this week and running through Saturday November 2, the Exchange Club will host their 68th Annual Fair, accord ing to Club President George Barnhill.
