What a joy to see this wonder fully restored worship center after Hurricane Matthew caused extensive damage. They had no flood insurance but tons of love and faith and support from local friends and others from all over Georgia who came and worked to restore their buildings. Pastor Don Spires is leading this ministry in a might way. Conrad and Billie Stocks are wel comed as new members of St. Simons United Methodist Church. Sym pathy is expressed to the family and friends of Karen McLawhorn and to the family and friends of Jan Vann Dorsey. A fu neral service will be held on Wednes day, October 30, 2019 at the Bruns wick Memorial Funeral Park, 4407 US Highway 17 North. Visitation will be at 3:00 p.m followed by the funeral service at 4:00 p.m. St. Simons Presbyterian Church extends sympathy to the family and friends of Ed Davis. Flowers were placed in Brunswick First United Methodist Church in celebration of Lila Horton’s 15th birth day by her family. Flowers were also given by Dr. and Mrs. Roger Purcell in honor of their grandson Paul Schiliro on his 2nd birthday. The fireplace is open and thanks to Wesley Cox my wood pile is full to overflowing. News for Local Churches From The Church Bulletins 12th Annual Community Beach Sweep Slated for GA/FL Football Weekend Organizers of the eleventh annual “GA/FL Football Weekend Commu nity Beach Sweep” are seeking volun teers to help with the community lit ter removal endeavor. On the morning of Saturday, November 2, 7:30 a.m., community members and volunteers will assist officials in removing St. Si mons Island beach litter left behind by pre-game merriment. Each year on the day before the an nual Georgia/Florida football game, 8,000+ football fans gather in a small area on St. Simons Island’s East Beach. Waste left behind such as foam coolers, beverage cans and bottles can easily end up in the ocean and become a threat to marine life without intense cleanup efforts. Students and football fans enjoy ing the St. Simons beaches are en couraged to “stash their trash” in the provided beach trash and recycling containers and to refrain from using plastic foam and glass products. “This year we will also tackle all 41 public beach access points as well as the old Coast Guard Station beach it self,” said Lea King-Badyna, executive director of Keep Golden Isles Beauti ful. “Again this year we will especially focus on the tiny bits of plastic, plastic foam and cigarette butts left behind.” Volunteers are asked to meet at 7:30 a.m. at the old Coast Guard Sta tion beach entrance boardwalk on St. Simons Island. Trash bags and gloves will be provided on site by Keep Gold en Isles Beautiful and actual volun teer work time is anticipated at one hour. “On this high-volume weekend, fans, civic clubs, church groups, youth groups, businesses and individuals are all invited and encouraged start their game day traditions by helping keep our Georgia beaches litter-free,” said King-Badyna. “This is an oppor tunity for community members to as sist our County government, make a big difference in our own back yard and help keep our coast healthy.” The 2019 community beach sweep initiative is organized by Keep Golden Isles Beautiful in partnership with Glynn County government, UGA Ma rine Extension & Georgia Sea Grant, UGA Public Service & Outreach, GA/ DNR Coastal Resources Division, Golden Isles Convention & Visitors Bureau, Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce and its St. Si mons/Sea Island Council, College of Coastal Georgia and GreenScene of Coastal Georgia. The series will follow a similar format to the annual win ter lecture series Sullivan conducts at the Coastal Georgia Historical Society on St. Simons, which focuses on the history of the Golden Isles. The series will run for six Tuesdays starting October 29 and ending December 3 with each session lasting for two horns from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Center. The lecture series will begin with an ecological overview of the coastal region, then will cover all aspects of McIntosh County’s history, including early European settlement, Spanish missions, the founding of Darien and the town’s rise as a prom inent cotton port, antebellum rice and cotton plantations, the county’s important timber and naval stores industry, the commercial shrimp and oyster fisheries, Har ris Neck and north McIntosh County and all aspects of the history of Sapelo Island. Info: call 912-437-4473. Sullivan is a fourth-generation McIntosh Countian, and is the author of 27 books on coastal Georgia and state history. He is the senior historian at the Coastal Geor gia Historical Society at St. Simons, a former editor of the Darien News, and was manager of the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve for 20 years. He lives in McIntosh County, is a historical consultant, and frequently lectures on subjects relating to coastal Georgia history.
