The Four Marx
Brothers, Duck Soup
& Cinema Gourmet
Cinema Gourmet, Golden Isles
Arts and Humanities’ popular series
pairing delicious food with classic
films, continues Thursday, November
14, with the Four Marx Brothers in
their hilarious, wacky, chaotic com
edy, Duck Soup.
The film’s screening and discus
sion are paired with the culinary de
lights of Chef Judah Lynch and Indigo
Coastal Shanty. The evening’s events
begin with delicious food at 6:30 p.m.
Made in 1933 Duck Soup tells the
story of on Rufus T. Firefly who is
named president / dictator of bank
rupt Freedonia and declares war on
neighboring Sylvania over the love of
wealthy Mrs. Teasdale.
Directed by Leo McCarey and star
ring the Four Marx Brothers Groucho,
Chico, Harpo and Zeppo, the fast-
paced and irreverent comedy-satire
mocks militarism, politicians and pa
triotism at a time when World War
One was not a distant memory and
fascism was on the rise in Europe.
Considered by many critics as the
brothers’ best film, it is full of metic
ulously structured one-liners, puns,
gags and physical comedy bits includ
ing the famous mirror sequence that
give viewers barely enough time to
catch their breath before moving for
ward to the next crazy moment. And
what does that title mean? As Groucho
put it “Take two turkeys, one goose,
four cabbages, but no duck, and mix
them together. After one taste, you’ll
duck soup for the rest of your life.”
