October 28, 2019, The Islander, Page 3 DOL Commissioner Butler to host summit in Brunswick October 30 siness Update CCGA’s Radiologic Science Program to host Open House A new partnership between Gov ernor Brian Kemp and state Labor Commissioner Mark Butler will be highlighted on Oct. 30 when the commissioner hosts an employer summit in Brunswick. The meeting is one in a series of 12 being held throughout the state called Employers in the Know. The meetings offer the commissioner a chance to meet with employers around the state to share the de partment’s work and hear back from employers on how they can better be served. “These summits are always a learning experience for the depart ment and me,” said Butler. “We are able to inform businesses directly about programs and regulations that may impact their companies. But more importantly, I get to hear directly about what we can do to help make the state even more at tractive as a place to locate and grow a business.” This year there’s a new addition with participation by leadership of the governor’s Georgians First Commission. That group will join in at all 12 stops to engage the audi ence in a similar conversation. “The Georgians First Commis sion looks forward to partnering with Commissioner Butler in this event,” said Scott Hilton, GFC ex ecutive director. “Together we will make Georgia the number one state for small business, and an even bet ter place to live, work, and operate a business.” Commissioner Butler will dis cuss current labor department ini tiatives and programs designed to encourage job growth and economic development throughout the state. The GDOL provides labor market data necessary for economic de velopers and businesses to make sound decisions about starting or expanding businesses. The GDOL helps match employers with quali fied job seekers and helps job seek ers secure jobs and develop their careers. Other speakers include: Labor law experts who can ex plain business policies and actions in this complex legal and regulatory business environment; Georgia Department of Labor an alysts speaking on unemployment insurance; and Experts who will present valu able information on Sexual Harass ment for Managers...A New Look, GeorgiaBEST@Work and more. The summits, which help employ ers learn how to better understand and conquer compliance challenges in the workplace, are sponsored by the GDOL and local employer committees. The summit will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Coastal College of Georgia, 1 College Dr., Brunswick, Georgia. Onsite registration the day of the summit costs $60. The College of Coastal Georgia’s Ra diologic Science program will celebrate National Radiologic Technology Week® with an open house for students and community members who want to learn more about the program on Thursday, Nov. 7 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mir iam and Hugh Nunnally Nursing and Health Science building in room 132. National Radiologic Technology Week, which takes place during the first week of November, shines a light on the important role medical imaging and ra diation therapy professionals play in pa tient care and health care safety. Radiologic technologists play vital roles in helping patients receive proper care. Through ionizing radiation, they produce diagnostic images used for the diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury; identify pathologies; plan and ad minister treatment; and work with phy sicians to help restore patient health. The College’s open house will give inter ested attendees a closer look at the work of soon-to-be radiologic technologists. Radiologic Science is a long-standing degree program at the College. The pro gram has been preparing students for a career in the medical imaging field for more than 50 years. In 1967, the Glynn- Brunswick Memorial Hospital—now Southeast Georgia Health System— started the Radiology Technology certifi cate program. The first class graduated in 1969.
