Children are expected to come to school prepared, ready to learn and to participate fully in their education, how ever many students are weighed down by responsibilities outside the classroom that normally would be taken care of by an adult. These outside issues are manifested in the classroom and lead to disciplinary problems, stress, depression and more, hence the need for intervention. The Communities in Schools Glynn County (CIS) mission is: “to surround students with a community of support, empower ing them to stay in school and achieve in life.” As a focal point of everything the or ganization does, this mission drives its staff, board of directors and volunteers to ensure that these students receive the trauma-informed care that they need. And it’s working. During the 2018- 2019 school year, CIS served more than 460 students in die Glynn Comity School System (GCSS). For die second consecu tive year, 100% of the students at Bruns wick High School and Glynn Academy who received services from CIS gradu ated from high school. This contributes to a recent report from Glynn County Schools after receiving recognition as a state leader for having one of die highest four-year graduation rates among other school districts in Georgia. But CIS does not only focus on suc cessful promotion to the next grade level for high school graduates. Promotion rates for elementary, middle, 9tii, 10th and 11th grade students were 86.4% during the 2018-2019 school year. CIS currently serves 543 students in eight schools: Brunswick High School, Glynn Academy, Glynn Middle School, Needwood Middle School, Altama Ele mentary School, Burroughs-Molette El ementary School, Goodyear Elementary School and Glynn Learning Center. Since their inception in Glynn County in 2007, tiie organization has seen tremendous growth and impacted thousands of lives in our community by becoming a support system for these students. Dr. Valerie Whitehead, executive di rector for strategy and innovation for the GCSS serves as the school system’s liaison on the CIS of Glynn Board of Di rectors has seen the direct impact that the organization has had in the school system. The CIS evidence-based service de livery model is a proven method that works. CIS recently released this evi dence plus inspiring statistics and heart warming stories of their growth and suc cess in their 2018-2019 Annual Report at glymicomity.communitiesinschools. org. To help CIS accomplish their mission contribute to the 2019-2020Annual Cam paign going on now. Partner with them to support our community’s students. Visit tiie website and donate to make an annual or monthly commitment. Another way to leverage a contri bution to CIS is to participate in the Friends of tiie Foundation car raffle: a partnership with the Davis Love Foun dation leading up to the RSM Classic PGA Tom event in November. By pm- chasing a $20 raffle ticket, you could be the owner of a brand new car and CIS will receive 100% of the ticket purchase. The foundation also has a bonus pool of funding for local charities, so tiie more CIS raises through the raffle, the more of the bonus pool CIS will receive.
