Page 6, October 28, 2019, The Islander East Beach roundabout Continued from Page 1 least two splitter islands done Friday and the rest on Monday, if not sooner. The stripes being put down now are temporary because the asphalt has to cure for 30 days before the permanent paint is put down. At the time, they expected to have ev erything complete by early this week, de pending on the weather, but in time for die so-called Frat Beach party on Friday. In addition, the project is likely to come in under it’s approximately $1 mil lion budget, according to Public Works Department Construction Inspector Phil Highsmith. Part of the savings came from not having as many utility conflicts to deal with as there could have been. The final cost will come in when the project is complete. According to Highsmith, along with tiie splitter islands and striping, signs and flashing pedestrian lights would have to be installed and one more resi dential driveway impacted by the project has to be poured. Questions have arisen about the cen ter of the roundabout and why there is no landscaping like the Demere / Fred erica Rd. roundabout. According to Public Works Director Dave Austin, the engineer said it could be difficult in some cases for large trucks to navigate the roundabout and their wheels may ride up on the center. So the engineer recommended against putting anything in the middle. The middle, which is 16 ft. wide, looks like brick, but is actually 8 inches of rock composite with 8 inches of concrete on top scored and colored to look like brick. This will protect the center if the wheels of a tractor-trailer run up on it. Austin said, “It was built for function.” Mike Smith of CGP was using a ‘ro botic total station’ to layout where the stripes would go on the pavement. He said due to the roundabout’s cir cular geometry, he couldn’t just measure where to put the stripes, it had to be cal culated using tiie robotic instrument. Highsmith pointed out that no trees were cut for the project, although they did trim some dead fronds from a nearby palm tree. In addition, the paved footprint of the roundabout is actually smaller than the old four-way intersection, which means no Department of Natural Resourc es’ wetlands jurisdictional lines were crossed and no saltwater marsh was impacted. CGP used a nmnber of local contrac tors on the job, including Seaboard Con struction, who did the paving. Allen Owens Co. did the pavement milling and Underground Excavating did the underground pipe work, grading and base work. The sidewalks are complete and were widened a bit to 8 ft. They cross the East Beach Causeway on the west side of the round about, and they cross Ocean Rd., not Ocean Blvd., on the north side. The roundabout at the other end of the East Beach Causeway, at Demere Rd. is currently in the planning stages. Highsmith said it would greatly im prove tiie sight lines for drivers turning left onto Demere, from the East Beach Causeway. » Our: r Se//1 Sell YOU a House Manage YOUR Property Rent to YOU Short-term, Long-Term, or Vacation 5445 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 COASTAL R E A LTY Ask about our ntiembership incentive to the Sea Palms Resort. 912-638-6660 or 1-877-638-6660 www.seapalmscoastalrealty.com Big Green Egg The Ultimate Cooking Experience' — mg Green hgg Unleash Your Backyard Gourmet!
