Page 8, October 28, 2019, The Islander Jl Arts Association November exhibit features weavers and photographers The Coastal Photographers and the Jekyll Island Cottage Weavers return to Goodyear Cottage to display their work from November 1-25 during the Jekyll Island Arts Association Exhibit. Hours are weekdays from Noon to 4 p.m. and has 16 floor looms plus four rigid heddle looms. Along with Betty Smith, three other members teach on a regular basis: Kate Hamer, Stephanie Perger, and Pa tricia Bowman, assisted by many mem bers. Sueanne Pasquarella, one of Kate weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. An art reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held on November 3 from 1-3 p.m. The Cottage Weavers of Jekyll Island Rmnbaugh’s first students, went on to become president of The Handweavers Guild of America. The 80 members of the Coastal Pho tographers Guild create art through their cameras. From amateur to profes sional, the members capture their ar tistic sensibilities, viewpoints, interests and passions in their photographs. The varied collection for the November Ex hibit was selected by Lucy Albenze, own er of Creative Frameworks and curator of the Butch Paxton Gallery. Her criti cal eye and excellent framing skills have enhanced the images that represent the unique world view of the photographers. Guild members also provide images for the annual October CoastFest held by the Department of Natural Resourc es, while their solo works have been displayed at the Horton Gallery in the Southeast Georgia Health System and the SoGlo Gallery in Brunswick. The Guild sponsors “The Big Photo Show” held each July at Glynn Visual Arts on St. Simons Island with companion ex hibits in the Welcome Center in die Pier Village as well as “The Big Photo Show 2” in Brunswick at the Butch Paxton Gallery. The Guild meets on the third Thurs day of each month to aid members in improving their skills in all aspects of equipment and photographic tech niques. Thought provoking guest speak ers and constructive critiques of recent works highlight the sessions. All levels of photographers are encouraged to join and participate in Guild activities and tiie public is welcome to attend the meet ings at the Glynn Visual Arts facility. She found space for her loom on the second floor of Goodyear Cottage and began to demon strate weaving each year for the Jekyll Island Arts Festival. When long-time weaver, Betty Smith arrived on the is land in 2000, she discovered Kate and moved her loom to Goodyear as well. To gether the two women wove and taught others informally. As the weaving movement grew, classes were offered through the Jekyll Island Arts Association beginning in 2004. The Arts Association purchased the first three looms, five members bought their own looms, and eight looms were contributed. There are now 25 members of the Cottage Weavers Guild, and the group Not all hearing loss requires a hearing aid.
