Refreshments will be served. Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, once a thriving rice plantation on the Al- tamaha River between Darien and Brunswick, provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives and culture of the Georgia rice coast from 1800 to 1915. Ophelia Dent left the plantation to the state of Georgia. Dressed as Ophelia Dent, Sudy Leavy, author of Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, one of Arcadia Publish ing Company’s Images of America se ries, will share snippets of letters from Dent to her lifelong friend Arabella Clark Cleveland. Dent met Cleveland when she was a teacher at Wykeham Rise School for Girls in Washington, Connecticut. Often a visitor to Hofwyl, Cleveland saved the correspondence that contin ued from 1912 to Dent’s death in 1973. The letters were transcribed by Cleve land’s daughter, Arabella Young. The Arabella Clark Cleveland Collection is at UGA. Leavy notes that the letters portray Ophelia Dent, her interest in and love of Hofwyl, her many friends and daily aspects of her life. “To hear Ophelia speak is just like sitting on the back porch of Hofwyl and eavesdropping on that day’s events,” Leavy adds. The plantation is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9-5:00 p.m. Hofwyl-Broadfield is located at 5556 US Highway 17N, Brunswick, GA 31525, located at the intersection of US 17 and GA 99, one mile east of 1-95, exit 42.
