Page 2, November 4, 2019, The Islander 1 AGE 2 N B-17 Aircraft to Visit St. Simons Island Airport historic aircraft, many of which are shared through national tours each year. This particular B-17 was named overhead and remarked on the Alumi num Overcast that would soon be fly ing over Germany. The B-17, considered the definitive Flying Fortress, earned the respect of its combatants, and the gratitude of its crew for its ability to withstand heavy combat damage and still return its crew safely home. The fully preserved B-17 Aluminum Overcast heavy bomber aircraft will hold the last stop of this year’s national tour when it visits the St. Simons Is land Airport on No vember 22-24. Tours will be of fered, and aviation enthusiasts may sign up for a thrill ing flight aboard this exceptional plane, one of the most im portant weapons the Allies had against tyranny in World War II. The 75-year-old warbird is one of a fleet of historic air craft owned by the Experimental Air craft Association (EAA), a national organization dedi cated to supporting the love of aviation, and sharing that passion with others. The EAA has a collection of 200 meticulously restored and maintained Aluminum Overcast, in honor of a term coined by a wartime reporter who wit nessed the flying armada of bombers After its wartime service, the plane was sold and used for an assortment of purposes for the next 40 years, until a private group in Oklahoma purchased it with the intent of restoring it to its original glory as a World War II bomb er. When the reality of the expense and time involved in such an undertaking proved to be an obstacle, the group donated the aircraft to the EAA to be come part of its permanent collection. The aircraft is now more than 90 percent accurate to its wartime construction, with allowances for up dated technology in such areas as navigation and brakes. When it is not touring the country, Alu minum Overcast is on display at the EAA Avia tion Musemn in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The aircraft will be placed at the EAA chap ter hangar located at 1797 Demere Road, St. Simons Island. Ground tours of Aluminum Overcast are available from 2-5- p.m. on November 22-24. Tour prices are $10 for individ uals, and $20 for families. Veterans and active mili tary members tour free. Flights are available by reservation from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on those days as well.
