the third option year for 2020 to RSG,
which includes an annual increase.
The county currently pays $102.72
per customer for ‘weekly household
garbage collection and disposal.’
This cost for 2020 will increase by
approximately 2% to $104.76.
The current cost to the county for
‘biweekly recyclables collection and
processing is $ 40.68 and will increase
to $41.52 next year.
County residents pay $125 a year
for these two services. That amount,
which is paid on the county property
tax bill, will likely remain the same
through the end of the five option
years on RSG’s contract, which ex
tends through 2022.
Depending on contract negotiations
at that time, the cost to customers for
those two services may be adjusted de
pending on the new contract.
Along with the two basic services,
weekly household garbage collection
and biweekly recyclables collection,
RSG currently offers five optional ser
vices for which the customer pays an
additional fee.
Under RSG’s proposed third option
year contract renewal for 2020, these
optional services will increase in cost
for the customers that subscribe to
them.
The services, their current cost
and next year’s proposed cost are as
follows:
• an additional household garbage
container will increase from $102.72
to $104.76;
• an additional recycling container
will increase from $40.68 to $41.52;
• biweekly collection of yard trash
will increase from $87.39 to $89.14;
• back door pick up services will
increase from $212.24 to $216.48; and
• drop-off centers will increase from
$ 28.00 to $29.00.
Again, the cost increases for the op
tional services will be passed along to
the customers who subscribe to them,
but the base fee of $125 a year for gar
bage and recycling pick up will remain
the same.
Last week the BOC’s Finance Com
mittee recommended approval of the
third option year contract with RSG.
In other business, the Finance
Committee:
• recommended accepting a
$297,691 the Georgia Governor’s Of
fice of Highway Safety. The grant is
for the Highway Enforcement of Ag
gressive Traffic program (HEAT) that
the county has been involved in for
several years dating back to former
Police Chief Matt Doering;
The grant funds are to be used to
help offset three HEAT officers’ sala
ries and purchase three new HEAT
vehicles. The local match will be met
by the county with the HEAT officers’
benefits (health insurance, retirement
and FIC A/Medicare);
• recommended approval of retiring
two police service dogs, Rex and Thor,
and authorization of a Request for
Proposal for the purchase and train
ing of three new police service dogs.
Police Chief John Powell said, for
the safety of the police dogs and their
handlers and to ensure the K9 pro
gram is the best it can be, the police
department recently had their four
dogs assessed by an expert in the field
of Police dog training;
After testing, two of the four dogs
were determined not suitable for po
lice service and will be retired. Rex
will go back to his original owner who
donated him to the police department,
while Thor, who was donated by the
Humane Society of South Coastal
Georgia, will be adopted by a county
police officer;
• recommended accepting the
2019-2020 Victims of Crime Act Grant
Award from the Criminal Justice
Coordinating Council in amount of
$64,734;
• recommended accepting a
$104,547 Coastal Incentive grant
from the Georgia Department of Nat
ural Resources, subject to the approv
al of the County Attorney. The federal
grant distribution is $45,000 with an
in-kind match of $59,547. The funds
will help support the second year of
the Shoreline Protection Implementa
tion Plan.
The local in-kind match of $45,717
for Glynn County will be met with em
ployees’ time. The remaining in-kind
match will be met separately by Jekyll
Island Authority with $4,184 and by
the City of Brunswick with $$9,646
comprised of employees’ time working
on this project.
