December 16, 2019, The Islander, Page 3 Michael Torras receives Young Leader Award from Marina Docks Age Michael Torras was honored at the Docks Expo on Dec. 4 in Nashville, TN and received the Young Leader Award from Marina Docks Age. The award is for men and women, 40 years old and under, who have made significant contributions to the marina industry and promise to play a big role in shaping its future. Torras was nominated by: Daren B. Pietsch, President Torras Properties (Parent Company of Brunswick Land ing Marina). Here is the context of Pi- etsch’s nomination. I was hired by the Torras family early in 2019 and have had the chance to work with Michael for the past nine months. Michael began his career at the 450-slip Brunswick Landing Marina 10 years ago and I am impressed by the results of his creativity and leadership holiday assuring that boaters have a home away from home during holidays instead of spending it secluded and alone on their vessel. As management and boat owners began to recognize how safe and secure the marina is thanks to the location in a protected basin, Michael took the charge to contact boat insurance com panies and make them aware of this. Thanks to his efforts, most boat own ers are able to stay at Brunswick Land ing Marina during hurricane season without any increases in their insurance rates. This has drastically increased oc cupancy during hurricane season allow ing boaters to avoid a long trip North while also keeping their premiums as low as possible. In response to this large increase in occupancy during hurricane season, Michael Torras with his son Fielding at the Docks Expo. Provided photo 3usin Michael also took the initiative to have webcams installed on every dock so that customers can view a five feed of their boat 24/7. There is no question that boat owners appreciate this tool and the peace of mind it brings. Following his grandfather, Robert M. Torras, Sr., and his father, Bob Tor ras, Jr. who both had a hand in design ing and building Brunswick Landing Marina, Michael represents the third generation and is clearly taking this re sponsibility very seriously. Through his creativity and leader ship and the projects and improve ments he is involved in planning and implementing, such as a new wave at tenuator and playground for children, Michael continues to have a keen eye on how to satisfy our customers and make sure we are and continue to be one of the best marinas on the East coast. Of course many team members have been involved, but Michael’s digital marketing savvy and focus on customer satisfaction has much to do with the fact that the marina now operates at 80-100% occupancy, year-round. His fo cus and efforts have played a major role in establishing the Brunswick Landing Marina as a premiere live-aboard mari na and cruising destination on the East coast. In addition to his management re sponsibilities, Michael personally hosts three social get-togethers per week where he welcomes newcomers and listens to suggestions and complaints from existing customers. This has allowed him to immediate ly address problems and issues before they spiral out of control. When cus tomer complaints are handled quickly, it makes their experience tremendously more enjoyable and cements their faith in the administration’s ability to look out for their best interests.
