SPLOST 2022 budget is $665,000 with $436,839 spent. • The Public Safety and Multiuse Facility is on track. CPS is the project management firm the county contract ed with in February. In March CPS met with the public safety staff to begin gathering information for a design RFP (request for proposal). Andy Leanza, Director of Emer gency Management & Homeland Secu rity, said, “We are defining our spacing needs now including needs for potential growth.” Land acquisition and permitting are scheduled to start August 1, 2024; invi tation to bid start date is April 1, 2025. The project budget is $11.6 million. Target construction start date is July 1, 2025. Fallon noted the county has contact ed Rep. Buddy Carter for help is getting federal dollars for this project. “This building will be a hub for other nearby counties to use in an emergen cy,” Fallon said. • Canal Road widening and Canal Road Roundabout include budgets in both 2016 and 2022 SPLOSTs. A contract has been awarded to Curb and Gutter Professionals for the Canal Road / Glynco Parkway construc tion project which includes the instal lation of a roundabout, widening and realignment of Harry Driggers and realignment of Old Canal Road con struction projects in an amount of $9.9 million with $2.9 million in funding provided by SPLOST 2022, $3.2 million provided by a Georgia Dept, of Trans portation LMIG funding commitment towards the Canal Road Improvement Project, $13 million provided by the DOT’s LRA FY24 formula award, and $2.5 million provided by the Capital Projects Fund Balance. A pre-construc tion meeting is scheduled for May 8 and a notice to proceed will be issued in mid-May. A contract has been awarded to Underground Excavating, Inc in the amount of $8,5. million for the Canal Road Widening Project with funding in the amount of $2.3 million to be pro vided by SPLOST 2016 remaining bud get for Canal Road Improvements, $5 million to be provided by SPLOST 2016 unallocated funds, and $1.2 million to be provided by the Capital Projects Fund Balance. • Dungeness Drive Extension is a 2016 SPLOST project to improve traffic flow from Southport Parkway to Hwy 17. The 60% design plans and a cost es timate are expected in May and the fi nal design by July. Right of Way needs to be acquired and most of the property is under a single ownership. Construction is expected to start Oct. 1 and last 120 to 150 days. $400,000 was included in SPLOST 2016 budget for this project with $321,000 remaining. • South Palm / Hornet Drive drain age outfall improvement is a SPLOST 2016 project. Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) funds have been applied for and are expected to be approved for fis cal year 2025. There are undersized an mis matched pipes that run under High way 17. Replacement of these pipes will help prevent back up in surrounding neighborhoods. Gentry commented that in the fu ture the county is considering hiring an engineering firm to help estimate costs for future SPLOSTs. • Chapel Crossing Drainage project is another 2016 SPLOST project bud geted at $350,000. Engineering plans are at 90%. After the design is finished the next steps are to submit a permit request to the Dept, of Natural resourc es. The permit from the U.S. Corps of Engineers has been received. This project is currently designated as “at risk.” • College Park drainage outfall proj ect is also a 2016 SPLOST project with a $1 million budget. The county is cur rently acquiring the necessary right of way for this project with the $1 million from 2016 budget. In a new timeline for Phase I county staff is currently meet ing with property owners to acquire right of way. This is a joint comity / city project and the city has budgeted $700,000 for property acquisition. This project will be funded through a De partment of Community Affairs grant and the grant deadline has been ex tended through March 2026. • 4th St. Sidewalk widening and re pair from Mariner Way to Highway 17. Permitting is under way and the county hopes to have the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NP- DES) permit by May 20. Construction start date is August 1. • Arnold Road’s sidewalk project on St. Simons will repair broken uneven sidewalks and building new sidewalks. The project will go out for bid by the end of May and property acquisition will occur during June. An environ mental permit is needed and Bed Tax funds will be considered to augment the SPLOST 2022 funds. Construction is expected to start March 2025. Total budgeted for sidewalks and trails in 2022 SPLOST is $7 million. • Roadway resurfacing SPLOST 2022 budget is $4.5 million. All roads to be paved along with start dates are list ed on the county’s 2022 SPLOST page under roadway resurfacing program. The Altamaha Park road is first up and paving will begin Monday, May 6. On Old Jesup Road the LMIG con tractor has begun work along Old Je sup Rd. between Burnt Island Rd. and Altamaha Park Rd. Paving along this portion of Old Jesup Rd. should begin Monday, May 13. Note: On St. Simons, the Redfem Village right of way paving was fin ished April 25 with 2023 LMIG funds. 2024 LMIG paving is gearing up. Bids went out last week with a project ed award date of July 18. • The St. Simons Gateway project management consultant has been se lected. The 2022 SPLOST budget is al most $14 million.
