Page 12, August 19, 2024, The Islander Not so hot potato It’s been a real ‘week’ if you know what I mean, so I’m just going to wan der here... Let’s start with how quickly the Democrats dropped President Joe Biden from the ticket. It amazes me, one day he was the best President of all time and the next he was left out on the curb for the trash man. Just wow! Those surrounding him, aided and abetted by the hard left media, told us almost daily that he was ‘sharp as a tack’ and ‘could outwork all his young er staffers.’ That was all proven to be nothing but lies during his debate with Presidential candidate Donald Trmnp, which the Associated Press® called “disastrous.” And then, about a month later, on July 21, Biden announces he’s drop ping out of the race - an unprecedented move this close to an election. President Lyndon Johnson dropped out of the race, but then he was be sieged by the Vietnam War, and he an nounced in March 1968 that he would not seek another term after just a sin gle state’s primary. Biden’s July decision comes after more than 14 million Democrats cast votes supporting him through the pri mary process. Biden advocated for his Vice Presi dent Kamala Harris, for whom no one cast a primary ballot, and she instantly became the “it girl” dubbed so by the same fawning liberal media. Funny how prior to Biden stepping down Harris was not generally re garded as a viable presidential candi date and was pretty much ignored by everyone. At one point right after Biden stepped down there was a movement underway among some Democratic of ficials and operatives to bypass Harris as Biden’s successor — or at least make the nomination a contest rather than a coronation. And then... all of a sudden, Harris is no longer the border czar, at least ac cording to the media and other Demo crats, so she can’t be blamed for what’s happening down there. The truth is, of course she can, right along with Biden himself - neither of them did anything about the southern border - they barely even visited - dur ing their three and a half years in office. The Democratic National Conven tion is this week and we all, or most of us, know it will be a sham when the delegates cast their states’ votes for someone for whom you did not vote. It’s also worth noting that Harris dropped out of the 2020 presidential campaign due to a poor showing in De cember 2019, but didn’t endorse Biden for three months, and now she’s the Golden Girl. And let’s not forget her refusal to do interviews or hold press conferences. Publisher The Islander EDITORIAL I’ve been enjoying the social media posts that say things like “Kamala is now promising to fix all the problems she took part in creating.” What a travesty. And since I mentioned social media, let’s continue down that rabbit hole. Another fave is one posted by a Dem ocrat friend with pictures of Tesla®’s Elon Musk, Amazon®’s Jeff Bezos and FacebookO’s Mark Zuckerberg. The meme includes the three men’s purported incomes between 2012 and 2022. Musk’s went from $2,000,000,000 to $273,600,000,000, Bezos’s from $18,400,000,000 to $181,300,000,000 and Zuck’s from $17,500,000,000 to $76,800,000,000. These three were contrasted with a picture of, I suppose, average work ing class citizens with the words U.S. Minimum Wage 2012 $7.25 per hour; 2022 $7.25 per hour. At the very bottom of the graphic it said “THREE WORDS: TAX THE RICH.” My response was: “First, the rich are already paying the most in taxes. This is from Federal Budget in Pictures’: “In 2021, the latest year with available data, the top 1 per cent of income earners earned 26 per cent of all income and paid 46 percent of all federal income taxes - more than the bottom 95 percent combined which is 33 percent.” The rich also provide a lot of jobs through large corporations. Someone else posted a comment stating, “At some point we need to quit asking who needs to pay more taxes, and focus on where the hell all of the money is going.” The ‘tax the rich’ poster replied to that saying, “Well, its not going to So cial Security, health care: physical / mental (especially in Ga.) child care, (or) education (especially in Ga.). The second half of my response was: “Second, social security and Medi care are not funded by taxes, that mon ey is taken out of our paychecks every week. And third, Zuckerburg and Bezos are liberal Democrats... wouldn’t you think they would be on your ‘tax the rich’ band wagon too? Maybe they are taking advantage of all the tax breaks and just not telling you.” I didn’t mention it, but our taxes, property taxes, do pay for K - 12 edu cation and if college graduates are al lowed to default on their loans, then our taxes will be paying for that as well. Finally, I’m still not sure why our taxes should be going for child care. Enjoy the beach with your best friend.
