reviewed the petitions, only 2,827
names could be counted; 3,098 signa
tures were needed for her to be placed
on the ballot.
The petition form shows boxes for
Personal Signature and instructions
to print the name under the signature.
It also asks for date of birth, resi
dence address, county, and the date
the petition is signed.
Each person circulating the petition
is required to sign (write their signa
ture) as well as print their name on the
Circulators Affidavit and include their
address, city and state.
One affidavit for each petition page
is required to be signed.
Reasons for names which could not
be counted as petition signers were:
did not live in Glynn County, were not
registered to vote in Glynn County,
and did not actually sign the petition
with a signature, only included a Post
Office Box for a residence address.
Many of the ‘signers’ only printed
their name. If those could be verified,
they were, Chris Channell, Director of
Elections and Registration for Glynn
County, said.
Brandy Scott Mai, Khurana’s attor
ney, questioned the BOE’s method of
verifying the names as well as office
procedures. She also asked Channell
what instructions he gave his staff in
verifying the names, and she asked
him what he considered a signature.
Channell responded, “Whatever the
voter considers his/her signature. We
also compared the petition signatures
to the signatures the BOE has on file.”
‘We are allowed to compare signa
tures to our data base,” Channell con
tinued. “There is no option to cure the
petition. We do, however, allow that
signatures can change over time but
some signature characteristics do car
ry over,” he said.
Channell also said, “If a signature
was questioned, we called and / or
emailed the person if we had their
information.”
Khurana said she collected about 72
percent of the total signatures.
Mai suggested that Khurana could
cure the signatures. “If there is any
questions about a signature, Laura
could cure it with an affidavit,” she
said.
Judge Cavender said, “It’s clear that
you have a legal right to relief, how
ever, the petition instructions were not
followed. The petition is denied.”
Khurana told The Islander she will
not appeal the decision.
