Park parking for
park users only
• Barnhill hired for
Juvenile Court
By Matthew J. Permar
Glynn County has some
ordinance restrictions about
using the parking areas at
county parks.
Chapter 2-11 - Parks and
Recreation, Article I of the or
dinance covers Park Use.
Section 2-11-5 deals with
parking and makes it illegal
to leave a vehicle unattended
in a park over night.
It lists some 18 parks by
name where over night park
ing is not allowed.
Section 2-11-9 limits the use
of the Frederica Park parking
lot on the north end of St. Si
mons Island to people who are
actively using the park.
During last week’s Coun
ty Board of Commission
ers (BOC) meeting (Thurs
day, Oct. 3) the commission

Rec fee increase
By Matthew J. Permar
During their regular meet
ing last week (Thursday, Oct.
3) the Glynn County Board of
Commissioners (BOC) unani
mously approved a number
of fee increases for the Recre
ation and Parks Department
that were recommended by
Director Lisa Gurganus.
Gurganus noted that many
of the fees have not increased
in the last 10 years. She added
that she had presented the fee
structure to the BOC during a
recent work session and asked
the commissioners if they had
any follow up questions.
Commissioner Sammy
Tostensen (Dist. 1) made the
only comment saying Gurga
nus had done a good job on the
fee increase.
Fee increases require a
public hearing, which was

College Park drainage
project construction to
start early 2025
By Pamela Permar-Shierling
Last Thursday (October
3) the City of Brunswick and
Glynn County engineers
discussed the long awaited
College Park drainage proj
ect with the College Park
residents.
The College Park neighbor
hood, in existence since the
late 1960s or early 1970s, sits
in a triangle bordered by Cy
press Mill Road to the south,
Spur 25 to the east, and Al-
tama Ave. to the west. All of
these main roads have been
built up with commercial and
retail establishments since
1967 when the (old) Bruns
wick Mall opened.
Note: Since parts of this proj
ect are in both the City and the
County, the two governments
are working
jointly on
the remedy.
The proj
ect is sched
uled to be
done in four
phases.
Phase
one is to widen the outfall
ditch along Spur 25 (Golden
Isles Parkway) to the marsh
to discharge the stormwater.
This portion of the project
also includes a huge box cul
vert at the Cypress Mill Rd.
intersection and a smaller box
culvert at the Altama Ave. /
Spur intersection.
Phase two will be to repair
all the storm sewer pipe inside
College Park and repave the
streets.
Phase three will be done
west of Altama Avenue
around Suburban Drive and
Old Cypress Mill Road. New
storm water pipes will be put
in place.
Phase four will be close
to the apartments towards
Home Depot and construction

The commission also ap
proved the pickup monitor
ing contract with Goodwin
Mills Cawood not to exceed
$250,000.
According to city Public
Works Director Garrow Al
berson, the typical reimburse
ment from FEMA is 75%
and from GEMA 12.5%. This
leaves the city to bear 12.5%
of the total cost.
Pickup is scheduled to be
gin Monday, Oct. 7. In addi
tion to vegetation type debris
pickup, the city will also pick
up construction debris caused
