Beaver dam
blocks drainage;
floods German
Village properties
Part One
By Pamela Permar-
Shierling
German Village residents
bordering the St. Simons
Land Trust’s (SSLT) Guale
Preserve on the north end of
St. Simons Island face a new
and growing flood threat.
Despite resident pleas, the
SSLT and the Georgia Depart
ment of Natural Resources
(DNR) have denied requests
to remove a beaver dam that
now blocks the park’s por
tion of the County’s historical
drainage system for the Vil
lage Bluff subdivision.
The park partners, DNR
and SSLT, refuse to allow
Glynn County to disturb the
dam or remove the beavers
to alleviate the neighborhood
flooding that threatens sev
eral homes.
Beavers rebuilt the dam
earlier this year which nows
blocks the historic water flow
in an established drainage
way that runs from the Vil
lage Bluff subdivision through
a narrow section of the pre
serve to Village Bluff Creek.
The barrier is causing a sig
nificant back up of water into
adjacent yards along the east
side of Virginia Drive.
The back up of the blocked
drainageway has quickly
swelled beyond the small re
tention pond constructed on
the former Musgrove property
by the County decades ago.
Since the beginning of the
year, rising water levels have
encroached across the park
boundary and into surround
ing properties. The standing
water quickly killed landscap
ing, submerged large oaks and
pines, caused fencing to rot,
and threatened home septic
systems.

By Pamela Permar-Shierling
Last Friday (October 10)
the Brunswick Police Depart
ment held the Second An
nual Blessing of the Badges
ceremony which is part of the
Faith and Blue Weekend Oc
tober 11 through the 14.
National Faith & Blue
Weekend facilitates safer
and stronger communities
by engaging law enforcement
officers and local residents
through the connections of
faith-based organizations.
Law Enforcement officers
from the Glynn County Sher
iffs office and Glynn County
Police Department (GCPD)
along with Brunswick Police
Department (BPD) officers
participated in the event.
Brunswick Police officer
Sgt. Terrence Tanner, a 16
year veteran with the BPD,
organized the Blessing.
“The Blessing is our second
initiative to bring our com
munity together through our
faith-based partners,” Tanner
said.
“Together with our part
ners and our leaders, we can
confront our problems, cre
ate building blocks within
the community. It is a great
networking opportunity,” Sgt.
Tanner said.
City Manager Regina
McDuffie along with Asst. City
Manager Jeremiah Bergquist,
who is also a former law en
forcement officer, attended
the event.
McDuffie said, “I can’t say
enough about our law enforce
ment protection. They provide
our citizens with many layers
of protection.
“Our new officers coming
in partner with our seasoned
officers. We also partner with
the College of Coastal Georgia
police officers and the Glynn
County Sheriffs officers,” she
said.
“Our law enforcement offi
cers put their lives on the line
for us every day to protect us.
They need our blessing, our
support, and our care.”
