Bike Walk Golden Isles receives Office of Highway Safety grant
Bike Walk Golden Isles has re
ceived a $96,974 grant from the
Governor’s Office of Highway Safe
ty to support alternative transpor
tation safety education and initia
tives in the Golden Isles. The grant
begins October 1 and extends
through September 30, 2025. The
grant program is funded by the Na
tional Highway Traffic Safety Ad
ministration (NHTSA).
“Part of the GOHS mission is to
assist in the implementation of pro
grams and campaigns designed to
prevent crashes and eliminate traf
fic deaths on our roads,” said Allen
Poole, Director of the Governor’s
Office of Highway Safety. “GOHS
will continue to develop new part
nerships and continue existing ones
in order to create, refine and imple
ment safety programs designed to
help our state and nation reach our
goal of zero traffic deaths.”
Bike Walk Golden Isles Chair
Murray Pounds said, “This grant
will finance Bike Walk Golden Isles’
education programs, safety cam
paigns, and much more. A portion
of the funding will allow BWGI to
hire a new Education Coordinator
to enhance the quality and number
of safety training opportunities con
cerning alternative transportation
modes.”
“We are grateful for the support
of GOHS and NHTSA as it allows
us to continue to expand the free
programs we’ve been offering, with
the goal of improving safety for all
people on the streets, sidewalks,
and trails of the Golden Isles area,”
said Pounds. “Through this grant,
we are able to include bike light
and bike helmet distribution during
our safety programs. Many people
in Glynn, McIntosh and Camden
Counties bike, walk, run, and roll
daily for transportation and fitness,
and we want to make sure they can
do so in a safe environment.”
