Let your heart be filled with the joy of His birth. On December 15 the Chancel Choir at St. Simons Presbyterian Church will present Joseph Martin’s “A Jour ney In Joy” at the 10:30 a.m. service. Congratulations to Ginny Connors on receiving this Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Member Award. Sym pathy is expressed to Kevin Lokey in the death of his mother Rosemary Tharpe. A very special musical treat, the Carols and Keyboards program, will be on Friday, December 20, at 7 p.m. at St. Simons United Methodist Church. Four pianos and organ - joy for all. St. Simons First Baptist Church musical celebration on December 8 was dedicated to the lives and service of Rev. Dr. Ben Haygood and Rev. Dr. Felix Haynes. Christmas Eve Candle light Service will be at 5:30 p.m. Frederica Baptist Church choir will present “Worship At The Man ger,” a night of worshiping the Savior, on Christmas Eve at 5:30. Blight law Continued from Page 1 is entitled the City of Brunswick Blighted Property Ordinance. It cov ers residential as well as commercial properties. A blighted property must meet two of six defined conditions and “be conducive to ill health, transmission of disease, infant mortality, or crime in the immediate proximity of the property.” Several commissioners were con cerned about renters becoming home less if a property is designated as blighted. Hunter said that the blight tax does not apply to a property that is occu pied or habitable. “We don’t want to put people out of their homes. The property would have to be in incred ibly bad shape for that to happen.” Hunter said he could think of only three cases in the nine years he has been with the city where people had to be removed from the home. “In that case we would work with our partners to find them a place to live.” Com. Gwen Atkinson-Williams asked if there were any protections for tenants if a landlord raised the rent because repairs had to be made. City Attorney Brian Corry said if that were the case the tenant would have a cause for action. Georgia’s HB 404, passed in 2024, provides protection for tenants. The new blight ordinance provides for penalties as well as solutions. The penalty is increased ad valor em tax; a factor of 7.0 is applied to the property’s millage rate. However, the ordinance states if the residence is oc cupied, the property is not subject to a blighted classification and not subject to the property tax increase. This decreased rate may be given in successive years depending on the cost to repair the property. Several steps are required to de termine if a property is classified as blighted. They include an inspection, written report and notifying the per son responsible for paying the prop erty tax. First, a complaint must be made by a public official or five citizens. The owner has two options: he / she can work out a plan with the city to repair the property or request a quasi judicial hearing in municipal court to present evidence why the property is not blighted. The city plans to advertise the or dinance and hold the first public hear ing at the Dec. 18 meeting.
