Subsequently Howard contacted Glynn County Planning Manager Ste- fanie Leif asking for a “zoning verifica tion letter regarding 5140 Blythe Island Highway.” According to Leifs response, “Under the Planned Development District Text, business, professional, and general pur pose offices, as well as the rendering of personal services, are permitted uses.” Leifs letter, dated Thursday, Nov. 21, goes on to say, “Based on discussions between you, other representatives of Saved By Grace, and Comity staff, it is our understanding that you are also seeking clarification regarding whether specific uses - such as educational ac tivities, classrooms, counseling, laundry services, or use of the existing kitchen by or for program participants and / or staff - may be considered permitted uses or incidental uses to a permitted use.” Apparently it was unclear what spe cific uses are allowed, as Leif contin ued saying, “If additional guidance is needed to determine whether these or other proposed uses align with the al lowed uses for the property, please pro vide further details, including the scope and nature of the proposed activities. This information will help us evaluate whether such uses may be considered part of the permitted primary uses or customary and incidental to those uses, as outlined in the Planned Development Text.” The first thing Howard emphasized in The Islander interview was that there will be no walk in-services offered at the Blythe Island Highway location. “We have not offered walk up services since August 1,” she said. What Saved By Grace will do with their new space is offer “wrap around services” to the men they have already served. ‘We will continue to follow up with the men in our program,” Howard said. We will make sure they remain em ployed and have a place to live.” We are also looking to find a place to house those who currently may need housing.” The wrap around services will in clude counseling, financial literacy help, career counseling, resmne building, time management, life skills classes, and mentoring. This would be done once the building on Blythe Island Highway is open. Saved By Grace will also help men new to the program. “One of the things we do is help the men with their documentation such as birth certificates, driver’s licenses, and other documents,” Howard said. We are currently working on getting all the permits necessary to open the Blythe Island Highway building,” How ard said. We want to make sure that we follow all the correct protocols.” Howard said there is not a closing date on the property yet. Saved By Grace was founded by Howard and Maria Gamble in 2016. It is a 501c3 organization which helps men basically get back on their feet. This includes finding shelter, helping them find a job, collecting the proper docmnentation and identification. Last year Saved By Grace had to close their location on Highway 341 which was a facility offering temporary shelter for 14 men and offered walk up services as well. Jones Shipyard that built Liberty Ships in WWII, original maps of the coastline, several journals, and a few rare books,” she said. “But if I had to pick just one thing - the Sandborn Map on Downtown Brunswick is at the top of my favor ites list. These were maps created for fire insurance purposes of cities around the United States in the 19th and 20th century. The map in the li braries’ collection spans 1939 to the early 1940’s, and it is fascinating to see how the City was laid out at that time. And I love that to make tweaks on the map, the makers would cut out paper and glue it over the pre existing map.
