Brunswick Police
Chief addresses
complaint
First and foremost, the Brunswick
Police Department is committed to
serving and protecting the citizens of
the City of Brunswick.
The Brunswick Police Department
would like to address concerns raised
in a formal complaint filed on Septem
ber 16, related to an incident that oc
curred on September 7.
Following the complaint, the de
partment conducted an internal in
vestigation based on body camera
footage and multiple statements. The
investigation concluded the officer’s
actions were in compliance with de
partment policy and Georgia law.
A response with the findings were
sent to the complainants. At the
complainant’s request, two meetings
were scheduled with the Chief and
the Captain of the Patrol Division to
discuss the findings; however, these
meetings did not take place. Our of
fice has since reached out to the com
plainants to arrange a meeting and
work toward resolving the matter.
We acknowledge that the depart
ment should have been more diligent
in communicating with the complain
ants to ensure they fully understood
the investigation process and its
outcome.
Going forward, we will take steps
to ensure direct contact is made with
complainants to address their con
cerns more effectively. As a communi
ty-oriented agency, we prioritize trust
and transparency with the citizens of
Brunswick.
A further review of the officer’s
body camera footage as well as any
additional audio or visual data will
be conducted to determine if there
have been any violations of depart
mental policy or state law in any of
his encounters. The department rou
tinely reviews body camera footage
and monitors officers’ use-of-force in
cidents. Additionally, policy changes
will be implemented to ensure officers
properly identify themselves upon ap
proaching our citizens, particularly in
non-emergency encounters.
We encourage anyone who believes
an officer has engaged in inappropri
ate conduct to speak with a super
visor or file a formal complaint. All
complaints are promptly investigated
by a supervisor and reviewed by the
appropriate chain of command. In ad
dition, all use-of-force investigations
will be forwarded to the City Manag
er’s Office to ensure that appropriate
measures have been taken.
The City Manager, Commission,
and Mayor have been made aware of
all concerns related to this incident.
As an agency, we remain committed
to evolving, learning, and upholding
the highest standards of service to our
community.

SSLT purchases 16
acres of SSI marshfront
The St. Simons Land Trust has pur
chased approximately 16 marsh-front
acres in the historic Harrington Com
munity, the last large undeveloped
tract of land south of the Lawrence
Road-Frederica Road roundabout on St.
Simons Island.
This property is now named after its
original owner, conservationist Elouise
Spears.
The Harrington Community, once
home to formerly enslaved people, was
divided into ten-acre lots owned by de
scendants of those people. It became the
largest residential neighborhood on the
island for African-American families.
Over the decades, nearly all the orig
inal 10-acre parcels were sold and sub
divided multiple times.
The Land Trust’s staff and board will
work with the Natalie and Joe Dixon,
daughter and son-in-law of Spears, and
others in the Harrington community to
preserve the land itself, and to honor
the significance of those who settled
there and made it their home for so
many years.
The maritime forest will remain
untouched, and the public will be able
to experience it through the Elouise
Spears Heritage and Nature Trail.
