Interesting Mews Heins.
On Saturday last the News treated its read

the Indian Springs, which have hitherto been
located in the connty of Butts :
“There are about four hundred visitors at
the Indian Springs in Merriwetber county.”
The Republican, which lays great stress upon

Tl e Beene In the Buprrme Court;
We notice in several ol onr exchanges a let
ter from Wm. Dougherty, Esq., of Columbus,
Geo., purporting to give a coned account ol
m the late scene in the Supreme Court, which he
alleges has been misrepresented, and in the
Southwestern News we notice a communication
Which charges ns with having misrepresented
the matter and attempting to defend Jod*e
Banning. It is trne we wrote an article ani
madverting upon the conduct of the Court and
Hr. Dougherty, founded upon the facts given
in the papers, which we cannot >ee are altered
fat any material particular by the letter of Mr
Dougherty. Wedid not believe Judge Benning
needed any defence at our bands, and conse
quently attempted none, hut we are satisfied,
from Mr. Dougherty’s own statement of the
Mae, that he sbonld have been dealt with by
the Court in the manner indicated in our arti
cle. We say this in no spirit of unkindness to
Hr. D., bat with an earnest desire to see the
Court enforce the respect due It, even at the
coat of a severe punishment to Attorneys who
violate its decorum.

Arrival or the Blount Family—('apt.
do Riviere Expected.
Among the passengers by the Alabama on
yesterday were Col. Blount, wife and daughter
en route for Mobile. Immediately upon their
arrival at the Pulaski House, Col. ii. sent for a
Lawyer and made an cflidavit before a Justice
of tbe Peace—for the arrest of Capt.de Riv
iere—whom he charged with being a fugitive
from justice, having committed a penetentiary
offence in tbe State of Alabama and fleeing
beyond its limits. This action upon the part
af Col. Blonnt, was taken to rid himself of any
auuoyance from the uxorious Zouave, who is
expected in the Huntsville, in pursuit of bis
lost inamorata, and who will be politety waited
on upon bia arrival by Sheriff Pendergptst.
We forbear to say more upon this subject, in
consideratiou for Col. B. who has doubtless
suflered in mauy respects from the public ex
posure of his private and family relationt—
caused by the villiauous designs of a cowardly
imposter—and the weakness and indiscretion
of his wife and daughter—but since he has ar
rived iu a section where buckshot and double
barreled guns are the recognised remedies tor
wrongs, such as he has suffered, we trust he
will not fail to apply them upon tbe slightest
attempt of de Rcviere to interfere mnher with
him or bis family, From their fellow passen

of Mrs. Blount’s insanity are well founded—

Masnine of Christians at Jeddah.
The cause of the cold-blooded massacre of
the English and Preach consuls and ibeir [ami
ties at Jeddah on tbe evening of tbe 15. U ol
June, by a mob of Mabommedau assassins, has
not dime to light. Many theories of tbe ani
mating purpose us the murderers are suggested
but nothing delluite is known. Nothing bad
occurred lo snow that tbe people of tire place
were uuimated by uuy extraordinary sentiment
of hostility lowaids tbe Christian inhabitants.
Her Mi jcsty’s steamer Cyclops bad fceeu lay-
ing lur about a weik iu tbe burbot- of Jeddah,
and tbe officers of (ue steamer bud made ex
cursious iu tbe vicinity ol tbe town, but never
met with the slightest moltstation or insult,
aud even on the very eveuiDg of the outbreak
several bad been walkiug about iu the bazaars
until nearly sunset, without tbe least apparent
symptom of the approaebing storm. A cor
respondent of the London Times writes from
A exanuria, July 6th :
On tbe evening ol tbe 15th ultimo, a few
peiaons—Creek resideuis ol the town of Jed
hua—came swimming off to the British ship
Cj clops, and stated tbat disturbances bad arist-u
and that they feared a couspiiacy bad been
eutered into against the Christian inhabitants.
Every thing, however, continued iu appear
ance perfectly quiet -, not a shot nor a cry was
beard, thougu the savage work was even then
already commenced; but the assassins bad
taken tbe precaution to use cold steel alone—
Tbe English Consulate was tbe lirst poiut of
stuck, anti 41r. Page, Urn acting Consul, fell
under tbe blows of a crowd of ruffians, who
followed up tbe murder by sacking the house
and tearing down tbe fl tg. Tbe unfortunate
man’s budy is said to have been found backed
to pieces. Tbe mob appears next to have
poured down upon the bouse of the French
Consul, H. Eveiliard. .
Here, however, tbe Governor of tbe town
made Some feeble uttempt to interpose; tbe
force ut bis ditpieal tmounted to only eight,
men, und, whatever t Hot Is they may buve used
they did not succeed in saving the life of eith
er lbs Consul or of bis wife. Buth were mur
dered, and their dsugbter alone, though under
twenty years of age, appears to have possessed
the spirit of a heroine—was rescued irorn the
bauds of tbe assassins, and covered with au
Arab cloak, she was carried so tbe house of
tbe kaimakau. Her face was laid open with a
gash from a sabre e-ut across the cheek, but
Oefore being dragged forth, she bad
the murder ol her father by the death oMp
assassin. JHL
Early on the following morning CitpMßß
Pulleu, still igaoraut ol wnat had occurred, sent
two boats ashore. When they neared the ja
iler reefs Turkish soldiers were observed wafu
ing them off; the eontiuutd, however, to ad
vance until they toned themselves surrounded
by a crowd of about six hundred men, wbo
from the out-jutting reels poured a shower of
stones upon the bouts. Tbe crews were fortun
ately armed, and soon forced their way back
to the ship, not, however, without having been
compelled to pour u volley of musketry into
their assailants.
An interval of five diys now elapsed unt
the arrival Irom Uscc-d or Kaamik Dacha, th
Governor of the Hadis*, with a body of abort
eight buodred Turkish troops.
The crew of the steamer entreated their
officers to be allowed to take vengeance upon
the city, if nut by laying the place in ashes, at
least by being permitted to land, even though
at the risk ol tluding themselves, at most two
hundred men, opposed to a population ol t-.veb
ty thousand; but the Governor sent repeated
messages beseeching Capt. Pullen to desist
from ml interference, warniug him that his
own bouse was surrounded-'by infuriated fa
natics, clamoring lor the sm render ot the
Christians, who they knew had obtained refuge
iu the house, and declaring that were a single
gun fired, or an armed roan lauded from tiie
ship, not only the lives of the retuaees, but also
bis own would, to a certaiuty.be sacrificed-
This officer can doubtless not have yielded
without a struggle, ami nvMllk'c argument
would probably have saved toe city from its
well merited doom.
On the 20th Kaamik PagJ| arrived with bis
troops, and some semblance was res
tored. Miss Eveillarn aid olhlHKcucd Euro
peans were transleired oil bouul the Cyclops
lu spite of the opposition at first made by the
Pacha, the crew end marines were ulterwaids
landed with the British and French colors,
and, escorted by a body of Turkish uilaniry,
they were led to the newly made grave, over
winch the funeral service was read, and the
English and French Hags wero re-hoisted un
der a salute ot twenty-onh guns. On the 2,'th
the Cyclops sailed for Bui z,"where she arrived
ou the 23d, bringing home twenty-four refugees.
The number murdered at Jeddah was twenty
one, and at the present moment uot a Chris
tian remains in the place.
Jeddah is a seaport town of some prominence
in Arabia, and lies on the easteru coast of the
Red Sea. nearly opposite the city of Mecca, of
which it is tho port, some sixty or severity
miles distant. Jiddab is witlilu the jurisdic
tion of the Pacha oi Egypt, has e considerable
transit trade with the smronoding nations, and
thousands of pilgrims arrive there annually on
their way to the city of the Prophet. The
place is cleaner aud better built tlmo most of
the eastern cities, and has a population esti
mated at twenty thousand.
A Novel Cate —There was A novel applica
tion of the famous Dred Kcott decision in the
court of common pleas of New York receutly.
About five years ago Electra M- Coon.obtaiued
a divorce from bed and board from her has
band, John M. Coon. (The parties are both
colored toiks.) Johnny theu left for California,
and while absent an order was entered that
during the pending of the action be should
pay one hundred and forty dollars alimony,
aud 1100 counsel tees. John recently arrived
from the land of gold, but refused to obey the
order. An application was thereupon made
for an attachment against him for a contempt
of court. The order to show cause why such
writ should not be issued was returnable this
morning, when John, through bis cousel,
James McCisy, contended that he could not be
Jiunished, and qaoted as bis authority the
arnous passage in the Dred Scott decision,
-which said that the negro was so far interior
to the white man, that he had no right which
tbs white man was bound to respect; that be
wag a mere chattel, and could be sold as mer
chandise. Under these circumstances the de
fendant claimed that he could not be punish
ed. as the plaintiff had no legal rights. His
Honor reserved his dectsion, but ordered that
interrogatories sbonld be filed to see whether
tbe defendant had really been guilty of any
contempt or not.
A correspondent in tbe Crescent City writes
as follows “Here Is something isaw myself.

•The Water Balloon, or New Saver of
Lire und Treasure from kinking Sldpt,
Menrt. Edctort :—A poor ship carpenter
was leaving his woik, near tbe close of the
day, when he observed theta sudden change
of the wind was carrying a balloon directly
over tlie water. The man in the car perceived
bis danger, and began to descend by letting
oil gas, bat he was carried s long ways out
beiore he could touch the water ; and then, to
check bis onward motion until the boats could
overtake him, be alternately threw oat ballast
and let off gas. Now and then the car rose
above tbe water, bot moat of tbe time it bang
and dragged among the waves until tbs boat
arrived.
Tbe fears of the carpenter, who had once
been a sailor, and more than once had taken to
theloug boat, gradually subsided into an in
genious spec ulatiun on what be bad seen..—
“Here,'’said he to himself,“is an air balloon,
floating and carrying a oar, because its.bulk is
lighter fbun the air it displaces; why not have
a water balloon, wbicb will float in the water
aud cany a load within it, because its bulk will
be lighter than the bulk of water it will dis
place ? Tbe water balloon can be made oi
tbiu iron, in the same egg shape as the air bal-
Soon, and tbe lower end can be made so loDg
aud heavy tbat the body will remain upright
ak ibe surface, ia the roughest weather. Let
tbe lower half be filled with provisions aud
treasures, and a row of people be seated sroumi
in tbe upper half with their batches screwed
down ou tbe inside, and a long pipe out at the
top for air, and they may fluat safely lor
months, until tbey ore discovered by some pas
sing ship.'’
The moon was shining when tbe triumphant
reverie of the inventor was disturbed by the
practical question, who will pay for making
this wuter-uulloou 7 The wages he had squan
dered would do it, but they could not be ap
plied iu tbat way. He calculated the chances
of eiilistiug one or another of the rich men in
the town, and was growing bumble under their
faucied denials, when he started to his ieetsud
walked directly to the house of au old mess
mate, who hud long been in the way of freqen
ting the savings bonk.
The man of savings listened can’ ioosiy, but
still listened to tlie story of the haif-iuspired
carpenter. At last the slams caught. Tuo
miser suggested improvements, which tbe in
ventor eagerly adopted. It now belonged to
both. Ami before they slept they were part
ners in the water-balluon soil tbe bank book.
Tbe invention and tbe deposits were com
bined. The water-balloon was launched by tbe
two merchants iu their own harbor, and Nep
tune was invited, ia ail sorts of ways, to try
his strength upon it. They have now brought
it into our waters, and placed it near the great
hath at the Battery. There it begins to get
attention. Oue old sea captain says it is ibe
veritable egg shell in which the witch sailed
across the sea, and he declares his readiness
to try it as soon as the w iuds please to get up
a gale. Hteambuat proprietors are begiouiog
to crasser for it. The reporters for the press
are hanging about it. It looks very much like
a success.
The view taken of this balloon by seamen it
manifested by their readiness to enter it any
time, and be roiled from the deck of a steamer
into the water, while tbe wiud is blowing its
best.
The proprietors claim tbat a supply of the
balloons would have saved every soul on board
of the Artie ; would have saved all the people
aud tressur of the Central America; would
have told the fate of the President, the Pacific,
tbe Atlaiftic and tbe City of Glasgow.
They claim that no more tieasure need be
lost ou its way from California. And they claim
that any plausible- show iu favor of this claim
entities them to lire attention of express and
insuraoce cumpnica at tbe great centre of com
raerce.
They respectfully Invite Mr. Francis aud Mr.
Raymond to examine their work; and, if satis
fied of its value, to adopt it as a hybrid, if not
as anew variety, in tbe family ot life boats.

to prevent him succeeding in bis purpose. We

The Niagara and the Agumemnon, Then
and Now. — ihe London Times, wuile the At
lantic telegraph cable was being shipped on
board the Niagara and the Agamemnon, ridi
culed, with some asperity, the soape and sail
ing qualities of the Niagara. The storm tbey
Doth met raid-Atlantio, which the Niagara
rode out so easily und the Agamemuon with so
much difficulty and danger, settled the ques
tion ot their respective merits. In reviewing
the results of the recent expedition, the Times
makes the following amende honorable for its
unjust depreciation of tbe Niagara :
“On tbe whole, we are of opinion that there
never will tie a fair trial till it is made with a
ship asoarefully adapted to the purpose as the
cable itself. It is mere child’s play to use such
ships os tbe Agamemnon, and we feel it some
what derogatory to the national credit that we
should have permitted the Americans, ont of
their small navy, to contribute a vessel 2.000
tons larger than oars, and evidently much bet
ter fitted for tbe work.
