will have another freeze before
“old Man Winter” makes his,
exit.
A special from Atlanta says it
has been found that thousands of
the city ladies are buying dress
goods, suits nr.d especially milli

ladies have found the style as good
while the price is very much
lower.

HOME GARDENS
CUT STORE BILLS
President Georgia Chamber Of-Com.
merce Shows How Millions Were
Saved Last Year
Atlanta, Georgia.—(Special.) —"Mere
money was saved in 1917 through the
medium of the home ga 'den than ever
before, the United States Department
of Agriculture estimating that there
were fully one million new gardens
made last year,” says H. G. Hartings,
President cf the Southeastern Fair and
the Georgia Chamber of Commerce,
in an interview reviewing the 1917
farming operation-s in the South.
“Thousands upon thousands of our
people in the South.” said Mr. Hast
ings, “for the first time in their lives
learned to appreciate the money sav
ing power cf the home garden, proper
ly planned, prepared for. planted and
kept planted during the entire sea
son.”
“Up to the present it has been very
bard to get our people to consider the
home garden seriously as a real sub
atantial factor in food production with
the consequent saving of money that
went for food supplies at the store.
Unless wo are much mistaken the
home garden will from now on be
taken as seriously as any ether part
of the farm work. •
“A quarter to a half acre devoted
to a variety of vegetables liked Ly the
family can be kept going nearly ,th«r
whole year In tho South and give Its
owner an much a-, the product of two
or Lin e acre- < f co .ton, eve i at pres
ent prices, will buy at the store. The
right kind ot a g;irden means an
abundapce of Ig i-lthful food •during
spring, summer and fall and an abund
ance either canned or dried for win
ter use.”
"Let no one b" fooled by the lies
spread abroad that the Government
Is going to seize home canned goods
on closet shelves In the farm or
home. These lies are started by Ger
run agents tor the express purpose of
discouraging <4ir people in, increased
food production and saving Few can
go t.e tho firing line, but all can join
in and have a part in home produc
tion of food.
"Wo have never seen a permanent
ly prosperous farm section either In
1 the United States or in foreign coun
tries that was not a diversified sec
tion, and in every diversified section
the homo garden has an honored ana
valued place. The homo garden is a
store bill cutter of tho first raak.”
