Professor Ripley, of Harvard
University, exhibited the ragged
lining of his coat at the conven
tion of the Amah amated|Clothing
Workers after the convention|;had
voted to reduce the working hours
to 40 a week with no change in
wages. “Remember,”said the pro
fessor to the men and women who
make clothing, “that, if in saving
yourself and the manufacturer, you
ask large profits io divide up be
tween you, and forget us, the pub
lic will not buy, and there will be
■ -nvthbig to divide up.” More than
half the people in the country he
said, are wearing well-worn, old or
made over clothing.
Science Makes
New Discovery
The Savannah News says: “Now :
comes news that many cures of se.
rious troubles among wounded sol
diers in the recent war were effect
ed by the substitution, for large
xiuantities of lost blood, of a mix
ture of water, salt aud glue.
The fluid was injected, it is re
ported, to give the heart something
to work with while the blood sup
ply was being slowly replenished.
The discovery, according to the
medical men, marks another new
era in the treatment of certain
cases
There is the inference that this
discovery, in co-operation with dis
coveries made long ago, relative to
the infuaion of actual, warm, vital
blood, and relative to the injection
of ce-tain simple elements to affect
the blood immediately, will lead to
the development of a variety of
scientific uses for transfusion of
blood substitutes.
If the substitution of a solution
of water and salt and glue is for the
single purpose of keeping the heart
pumping, some actual fluid wil
work wonders and effect marvelous
cures; whv should not science
transform the simple solution into
a fluid which will contain chemics'
elements needed for blood content
for thia or the other condition of a
patient.
Speculation on the possibilities
suggested is interesting to the lay
man as well aa to the medical
student."

WHAT a difference in
these motor-car days,
when every point in the

“just around the comer.”
People’s ideas are chang

They’re beginning to fig

ing them to keep a car. And
the man who is doing the
greatest amount of figuring is
the man with the moderate
price car.

There still seems to be a
notion in some quarters that
any tire is good enough for
a small car.
That's not what the man
who owns it thinks.
