By HEATHER KIMBLE
Editor-In-Chief
Don’t believe everything you hear! The Cluster is not dead. Now that
you’ll be able to sleep tonight, I would like to apologize for the month
without a paper. Unfortunately, the editor selection process was not com
pleted until Sept. 25. Guess what? Now you’re stuck with me!
1 can’t believe it! The first edition of The Cluster for 1989-90 is ac
tually together (more or less) and in your hot little hands. To be quite
honest, l was worried that there wasn’t going tc be a paper this week
either. However, thank* to what appears to be the beginning of a great
staff, we managed to get a paper together. Granted, there are no comic
strips and the paper is somewhat shorter than usual, but it is a newspaper!
After all, we can’t make it perfect the first lime. We’ve got to give you
something to complain about over the lunch table.
For those of you who have no idea who 1 am, my name is Heather
Kimble. I am a senior English major from the booming metropolis of
Oxford. Ga. So. now that you still don’t know who 1 am. I’ll go on with
this column in hopes that you get to know me a little better through what
I write.
I’m really excited about this year, and to get you excited about the
Cluster, I’m going to highlight a few of my goals for the year. As Editor,
I sincerely hope that you will notice some changes in The Cluster this
year. Better yet, I hope you like the changes that you sec. One major
goal that I have for the year is to form a well rounded, objective paper.
To attain this goal. I’m trying to get people from all aspects of Mercer’s
community involved with The Cluster. Diversity in a newspaper staff
is the element that makes the paper interesting and exciting. I want The
('luster to represent every simzJe group on Mercer’s campus. If everyone
who drops The Cluster into their floorboard, or files it away, or (Heaven
forbid) throws it into the trash, is more informed than when they picked
up the paper, then I’ve achieved this goal and will be content. Although
this next comment is more of a personal goal than anything else, my
achievement of this one goal will assure a good, or at least steadily im
proving paper for the year. Before I graduate. I want one particular pro
fessor to tell me that I am an interrobang. If you don’t know what this
word means, look it up or find me and ask its meaning. If I keep this
goal in mind, and constantly strive to achieve it. 1 can assure you that
there will never be a dull minute in The Cluster*.
This will probably be the longest editorial that I will write this year
because I would much rather fill the editorial page with comments or
letters from you than sit down and rattle off long (sometimes BBOOR-
RIINNGG) editorials. In other wotds. I encourage any and all input that
you arc willing to send to The Cluster.
Before 1 say bye for the week. I’d like to take this opportunity to say
that I'm very happy and honored to have the position of Cluster Editor.
I’d also like to thank those who recommended me for this position and
those who patiently interviewed the candidates for the editorship. I just
hope that 1 can live up to everyone’s expectations (including my own).
