'it that merit the approval of the

great deal ot interest. It was ine of the

Tbe life of everyone shonld be one of
sacrifice, should be offered up to what to
good. Each oae should giasp with both
hands, that which is true, glorify God, and
eojoy him forever.
Ttutb to that io tbe character which
does not deceive. Many men build up
their character with brown stone front*,
when in tbe back-yard la only to be amn

Life is the fancy, sympathy aad imsgi

Athens is a scholastic city. Its institu
tions of L-arning are
“Thick a. the leaves that strew the brooks in
V alam brosa.”
One of tbe most meritorious of these
devoted to tbe culture of young ladies, ia
the Rome Schoo), of Miss Callie B<>s
nowski.
It is established in the grand old resi
dence oocc occupied by Chief Justice
Lumpkin. The site is commanding and
beautiful overlooking Prines Avenue. Its
Druidical oaks, grassy lawns, winding
walks overarched with holly, cedars aud
stately elms fit it for an abode of the
Muses. It haa been well said, that "there
is a moral snd intellectual discipline, si
letit and unostentatious, in its p.ocesa, in
the cultivated flora of the field. They are
among our first and best instructors, con
veying lessons of purity and grace to the
mind in the age of its awakening suscepti
bilities.”
In these lovely grounds the young ladies
of tbe institution
‘Might sweetly sing their summer's day,
Or muse tbeir silent hours away."
But, though eocbantlngly pleasing, tbe
external surrounding* do not monopolise
the attractions of Ute Home School. To a
lover of books, tbe spacious reading room
1* replete with literary treasure* of more
value than the gems of All Baber’* Cave.
Here one who has acquired a taste for
reading, may enjoy the delightful humor
ot Addison, or of our own Irving, or revel
with Milton
“Ln note* with many a winding bout
Os linked aweeuiou long drawn out,”
or spend an hour with tbe Swan ot Avon,
mastering the exquisite seen, from the
Merchant of Venice, spoken *o trippliugly
upon th. tongue by tbe daughter* of the
Home School al tbeir charming entertain
ment.
Tbe weather Wednesday evening waa
not propitious. It bore a disagreeable re
* tublance to what Mr. Mautllioi supposed
would be bis coudition after death,“damp
motet, unplnaant.” Neverthi L-sa, a full
and admiring audiaucu encouraged the
young lady pupils by »n unff sgging inter
eat from tbe beginning to th. cluse of tbeir
exhibit m>.
Without specifying all that waa meritor

cal |«rforinanc«e. It la but echoing tbe
opinion* ol those most coinp.-t<nt lojudgr,
to *ay tbal they were admirable both in
conception and execution.
I cannot repress tbe desire to mention
tba graceful, easy and cordial manner with
which.tbe Prindpai received Invited guest a
and managed tbe charming and varied
programme. She remind* one of tbe word*
of Hamlet:
"Bleat are tho*e
Whose blood and judgment are ao well
commingled,
That they are not a pipe for fortune’s finger
To sound what atopafa please."
