FIRST BAPTIST.
At the First Baptist, the pastor, Dr.
Campbell, preached a sermon of peculiar
beauty and force from tbe text: “The en
trance of Thy Word is light.” We are ut
terly ignorant as to tbe nature of light.
Darknes* is tbe shadow of tbs earth upon
which we live, and light tbe absence ot
that shadow—this being about the sum to
tal of what light is.
After a scientific discussion of tbe con
stituent prop.-rties and qualities of light,
tbe speaker drew a striking and perfect
analogy between physical and spiritual
light. The vitalizing property of light,
producing and maintaining life, was given
special prominence, and applied with much
clearoea* and force. Blot out the snn, the
source us physical light and couacqucnl
• life, and death to every form of animal
and vegetable life eoauea. 80, destroy the
Bibb-, blot it out from tbe history of the
world and tbe memory of man, and the
same results follow to a l social and spirit
ual life. Tbe study of God’s Word is of
tbe highest iin[K>rtaoce. The Christian
wbo content* himself with a mere superfi
cial knowledge, or a meagre, second-hand
supply of the truth* and facts therein con
tained, is starving bis soul The pale face
ot the invalid is not wholly due to tbe

FIRST METHODIST.
Rev. W. D. Andenun preached from the
. Uih and lilh veiaes of 3rd chapter of
Mathew: “I indeed baptise you with wa
ter unt<> repentace, but lie that cometb
after me is mightier than 1, whose shoes I
am not worthy to bear; He shall baptize
you with the Holy Ghost and with fire;
whose fan is in His band, and He will
r thoroughly purge His floor, and gather His
wheat into the garner, but will burn tbe
. chaff with unquenchable fire.” John
. stood next to Christ, both as to time and
i station—but above all, as to tbe doctriu
he preached. Repentance is the first, las
. and greatest step to salvation. To crea
tures such as w<, repentance is logical and
. natural. When a man does wrong, is con.
scious of tbe wrong, It is logical aud natu
; ral that he should feel sorry for tbe wrong.
I But in tbe act of repentance, there is no
deliverance—no life-conferring power
i Christ gave it force. He was to baptize
with Holy Ghost and fire—baptize with
. power. The power to become the tons and
, oanghtvre of God. This leads thought in
I order and hamony to tbe next: “Whose
fan is in His hand.” Everything must
- show its right to live. Tbe tender plant
- must druggie, tbe bird aud beast must
have sleepless vigilance to escsoe their
fries. Mau ft under the same law. His
splendid endowment of power brings him
under tbe It* us stewardship. Probation
is to dcsenniue the wheat and the chaff—
The ttheat is the man who puts bw talent
to usury—tbe women wbo set as tbe wise
virgins of Gospel story. “Straws show
which way the wind blows." So we have
all come to know. But under tbe simile
used in the text, we are taught that while
the straws show which way the wind
blows, so also does the wind show which
are the draws. A man may know bis spir
itual strength by the measure us resistance
lie off rs to evil. Christ has not decreed
that Uii* man is wheat, and thia one chaff;
but In tbe great school of trial, He is ascer
taining. Io tbe K ngdom of God there 1*
the iaw of compensatioa. When we read
in the Bible us men wbo have won great
victor tea, we find they were men resisting
evil most and best. They got their muscle
breasting tbe storm.

No instrament will probably ever super
cede the “guitar” as a favorite, for its
sweet tones, its capacity, and tbe many
graceful positions tbe performer may as
sume, are alike attractive. Os Spanish
origin, it carries with it an air of romance
pleasing to the imagination; while listen
ing to the strains of some romanz i or sere
nade, one may rea lily draw pictures of
love scenes beneath the sunny skies of
Spain; of fair maiden’s blushes as she listens
to the song of some ardent admirer,
while he accompanies himself upon tbe
“guitar.” It is doubtful If theie is anyone
who loves music, that has not a warm
place in their heart for this instrument;
easy to learn as an accompaniment instru
ment, aud unexcelled as sneb, it has yet
a depth of capacity that few but expert
performers realize. A noted German so
loist, once remarked that he had been
“studying the guitar for years, and had just
learned that be bad a great deal more to
learn, and that there wa* enough harmony
in the first position to occupy a life time of
study.”
The harp too has always been more or
less “a society pet,” but its high cost, the
great number of strings, and difficult tu
ning; requiring diligent practice and ap
plication; place it within the reach of but
few; so, though favored, it is rarely seen
in ibe parlor of the aristocrat, exc pt in
Italy Its home, where one will often find
mere children expert performers. To
once have heard tbe “harp” in the bands
of a good performer, is always to love it.
Tte Zytber alto has bad Ito day, aud
passed into obscrurity as a society amuse
ment; like tbe “harp,” it la exceedingly
difficult, requiring a great deal of power
aud study. A few years ago one would
frequently bear the xy'htr at fashionable
entertainments, while now it is not thought
of. A nut onal Geimao instrument, and
greatly loved by them, >t also has a warm
place in tbe hearts of levels us stringed
insi rumento.
The piano, and violin are so well known
and loved by everyone wbo has an ear for
music, that their position is established as
a “household article.”
Within a few years tbe cornet was very
popular, the young l«dy and ber sole
l ather c*r»et ca-e was a common sight on
the streets of our large oities, but she soon
became ' ired of having her pretty lipa
pressed bard and thin, and must (Jay the
“irandoline** instead, which like tte guitar
is a Spanish instrument; nut very difficult
to master and very pleasing to the ear.
With this additional advantage of fc lug
fingered the same as the violin, which baa
tieen a gr» at help to its gaining its way to
favor, and is very popular at the present
time, sharing honors with the “guit y
»od “iMinjo.”
Tbe tanjo baa, but of recent yean been
perfected, and may truly be said to be our
“American inalnimeol," having been de
veloped and perfected by the “Ingenious
American,” though its direct origin is not
really known. Fartlcvtarly adapted to
lively music and requiring but little exer
tion to “pick,'’ it baa liecome tbe favorite
of society, and tbe pet of ell lover* of
quick music. Il is fast becoming popular
