[For the Empire State.]
THE SKA.
Brightly o’er the smiling landscape,
Lightly sweeps the summer breeze,
And the wind gives answering music,
Now to music of the seas.
Cheerily the sailor singing,
Hailing from a distant shore,
Answering to the landsman’s laughter,
Rambling when the billows roar.
Deftly hidden in the greenwood,
Is a “darting cottage home,”
Silently yet sweetly saying.
“Always welcome, ye who roam.”
Nodding trees and waving flowrets,
Ask you mutely for regard,
Saying, “sailor do not leave us,
Stay and lore will thee reward.
“Age thy father’s form is bending,
Nature’s life will soon be done,
Darkly to the grave descending,
Earth is lost and heaven begun.”
.Vain, ah vain are Nature’s pleadings.
Earth and air are not so free.
Riches, honor, love’s devotion,
Yield no blessings like the sea.
On the waves God’s truths are written,
Nature slumbereth on the sea,
Early the true sailorlearneth,
Kindness, truth and charity.
North and South the seaman re vet h,
O’er the blue and bounding wave,
West and East at will he wanders,
Every moment o’er a grave.
Then fill the goblet, fill it freely,
Hearts and hands together be,
In friendship eve here we pledge us,
To our friends upon the sea. STELLA.
