Fool hath said In his Heart tKekV Is no God.” j
When nature folds her veil around,
The scenes of noonday joy,
’When all is still, and not a sotiw!
Is heard to breathe annoy—
The mind may rest from labor free,
Ou Father, Son and Spirit three.
When night wraps earth iu sable gloom,
And twilight fades away—
When life is silent as the totnb,
Clad in its dark ‘ar?asS
’Tis then the Christian soul may rest
In safety on Jehovah’s breast.
When Lunft’s beads dance o’er the lawn
When gentle zephyrs bloW—•
When rippling rills glide smoothly on,
And in sweet uniou flow,
’Tts then and there the soul may fly.
And read new lessons from on high.
God’s presence dwells in every place,
About, behind, before—
He moves in endless, boundless space,
And fills creation o’er,
Not moved like man by storm or blast,
He’s here and elsewhere, first and last,
Go look beneath the Ocean wave,
And gaze on every star —
Go wake the cold and silent grave.
And God will meet you there.
He's here, He’s there, lie’s everywhere,
In Heaven; in Hell, in Earth, in Air.
Above* beneuth, without, within,
-Ahd past the pale of being,
The burning eye of God is seen,
An awful eye all seeing.
For all of life and light is His,
Where all things are, where nothing is.
The high, the low, the great, the email,
The Nat ions bond and free,
Before the great Jehovah fall,
And own his power to be.
And heathen, too, with blessed accord,
Praise one Jehovah, Jove or Loid.
Oh ! fool, lift thou thine erring eves
Where Angels’ songs resound,
-And seek for life beyond the skies
Where God’s elect are found.
For soon, alas! thy soul must dwell
High up in Ilcaveu or deep in Hell.

S&uthey ox Dueling.— Lord Byron, as is
Veil known, was much galled by some severe
strictures made by Southey ou his character
end writings, and announced his intention of
•demanding “the satisfaction due to a gentle*
laan.” For some reason the challenge was ne
ver sent, but iu anticipation of it, the Laure
ate prepared the following reply, which was
found among his papers c
“Sir : I have the honor of acknowledging
the receipt of your letter, and do myself the
pleasure of replying to it without delay.
“In affairs of this kind, the partners ought
te meet upon equal terms. But to establish
the equality between you and me, there are
three things which ought to be done, and then
Ti fourth also becomes necessary, before I can
taeet you ou the field.
“First, you must marry mid have four chil
dren—please be particular iu having them
girls.
“Secondly, you must prove that the greater
part of the provision which you make for them
depends upon your life, and you must be under
-a bond of four thousand pounds not to be
•hanged, uot to commit suicide, and uot to be
killed in a duel—which are the conditions up
on which I have effected an insurance of my
own life, for the benefit of my wife and daugh
ters.
“Thirdly, I must tell three direct falsehoods
“concerning you, upon the hustings, or in some
other not less public assembly ; and I shall
neither be able to do this, nor to meet you af
terward in the manner you propose, unless you
can perform the fourth thing, which is,
“You must convert me from the Christian
religion.
“Till all this be accomplished, our dispute
must be carried ou without the use of auy more
iron than is necessary for blacking our ink or
mending our pens ; or any more lead than en
ters into the composition of the Edinburgh Re
view.
“I have the honor to subscribe myself, sir,
yours with all proper consideration,
Robert Southey.”
Earthquake in Malta*
On Sunday, the 25th of October, at eleven
minutes before 2 o’clock A M the Islands of
Malta and Gozo were visited by shocks of an
so violent in their nature, and so
doug iu duration, that the oldest iuliabitants do
toot remember ever to have experienced any
thing so severe. The first shock made itself
perceptible by t remulous motion similar to that
caused by the passing of a heavy gun carriage
a thousand times repeated, accompanied by a
rumbling noise, of distant thunder, which rapid
ly increased in violeuee until every building
trembled. Scarcely a minute had elapsed when
a more violent shock, accompanied by a louder
noise, occured. The alarm occasioned was gen
eral throughout town and country,
“Men, women, and children, suddenly arous
ed from their slumbers, issued from every house
rushing into the streets made the best of their
way to the squares, and other spaces which
soon became full of people. The sentry at the
Treasury left his post and ran to the main
guard which he turned out, under the impres
sion that shells were being thrown into the
town by an enemy from some steamfleet. The
two shocks, the interval being so brief as to be
incalculable, lasted two minutes. In the city of
Valetta scarcely a building escaped injury, and
all corner structures have more particularly
suffered. Os the Roman Catholic churches
these of San Giacomo, St. Orsolo, and St Do
minico appear to have suffered most.
At Fiorina and each of the three cities, as
well as in the harbor, the shocks were felt with
considerable vigor, and at Sengles, Cosp cua,
and Vitorioso, many of the buildings are injur
ed. Persons on board ships in the port des
cribe the effects of the earthquake, as felt by
them, as of letting go the ships boats from the
davits by the run, only much stronger. The
sea receded two feet and a half. The night had
been without a breath of air, with a sultry sen
sation, the sea perfectly calm, and the moon
shining in a clear sky, with a brightness that
seemed to transform night for day, it being
within twenty one hours of full moon.
At Civita, Vechia, in the interior of the is
land, all the churches, monasteries, nunueries
and hospitals (the church of St Auguistine ex-
sustained greater or less damage. The
ilome of the cathedral is reut, so as to admit
the.light, and the belfry is much shaken.—

duly to hand. Enclosed please find S3B 60, it being tbe
amount for Hair Restorative. 1 have sold it all. * * *
If you choose, you may send six dozen bottles Hair Resto
rative—l think 1 can sell it. It bus worked miricles in
this place. I sold a man six $] bottles, that was bald, and
it fetched new hair out all over his head.
Yours respectfully, M II GRIDLEY.
CR R Office-, Vandalia, June 21, 1854.
Professor Wood—Dear Sir : I take pleasure in bearing
voluntary testimony to the excellence of your Hair Resto
rative. Three months ago my hair was veiy grey. It is
now a’dark brown, (the original color,) smooth and glossy.
The only application I have made to it, has been the Ilair
Restorative, prepared by you, and which, from the result
iu my own case, I can most cordially recommend to others.
Respectfully yours, EDWARD WALCOTT.
Vincennes, la.. June 21, 1853.
Prof. O J Wood : As you are about to manufacture and
vend your recently discovered Hair Restorative, I will state
for whomsoever it may concern, that 1 have used it, and
known others to Use iUtibut l have for several years been
iu the habit of Using other Hair Restoratives, and that I
find yours Vastly superior to any other I know. It entirely
cleanses the head of dandruff, and with one month's pro
per use, will restore any person's hair to the original youth
ful color and texture, giving it a healthy, soft and glossy
appearance ; and all this, without discoloring the hands
that apply it, or the dress on which it drops. I would
; therefore recommend Its Use tocVery one desirous of having
a line color and texture to hair. Respectfully vours,
WILSON KING.
St. Louis, June 29, 1553.
Prof. Wood : As you are about to prepare and vend your
recently discovered Hair Restorative, and as you request my
opinion of it. I will state that my hair was, a few month's
ago, very grey, and after using two bottles of your Hair
Restorative, it resinned its original color, and since its ap
plication, all dandruff has disappeared from my head, and
1 have been troubled with no disagreeable itching of the
scalp. 1 ain satisfied that those whu Use it, Will not regret
it, as it gives the appearance of having been recently oiled.
lam prepared therefore, to recommend its use to all who
are desirous of having a beautiful head of hair.
I am, sir, yours, etc., H L STEWART.
Cincinnati, 0., Feb. 10, 1854.
Prof. Wood—Dear Sir : My hair had for several years,
been becoming prematurely grey, accompanied by a harsh
ness which rendered the constant application of oil neces
sary in dressing it. When i coiuiivenmi using yout Heii v -
I Restorative, about two moot -s ago, it was in that condi
tion ; and having continued its use till within the last three
weeks.it has turned to its natural color, and ttssWHed a
softness and lustre greatly to be preferred to those produced
by the application of oils or any other preparation I have
ever used. I regard it as an indispensable article for every
lady’s toilet, whether to he used as a Hair Restorative, or
for the simple purpose of dressing W beautifying the hair.
You have permission to refer to me all who entertain any
doltbt of its performing all that is claimed for it.
MRS C SYMOXDS, 144, 3rd Street.
Watertown, Mass., May 1. 1854.
Prof. 0 .1 Wood : Allow me to attest the ‘irtucs and
magic poWcrs of your Hair Restorative. Three months
since, being exceedingly grey, I purchased, and soon com
menced to use two bottles, and it soon began to tell, in re
storing the silver locks to thVtr native color, and the lmir
which was before dry and harsh ar.d falling off, now became
soft and glossy, and it ceased falling ; tbe dandruff disap
peared, and the scalp lost all the disagreeable itching so
annoying before, and now I hot only look, but feel young
again. Respectfully yours, etc..
