VOTE ON FACILITY PLANNED
NEAR COUNTY LINE?
By Zach Mitcham

The petition is legit — at
least as far as the names are
concerned.
But will there actually
be a referendum on a pro
posed trash incinerator in
Elbert County, just across
the Madison County line?
That question remains unan
swered.

Board picks
Lewis for new
EMS director
By Zach Mitcham
zach@mainstreetnews .com
Jason Lewis of Oglethorpe
County will likely be Madison
County’s new EMS director.
A county public safety advisory
board, comprising public safety
officials who will work closely with
the new director, nominated Lewis
for the post Wednesday. County
commissioners will vote on the rec
ommendation sometime in early
April
Lewis, who lives just outside of
Carlton, has been the assistant EMS
director of the Oglethorpe County
EMS department since 2007. The
new director has worked at Grady
Memorial Hospital in Atlanta,
Athens Regional Medical Center
and the Oglethorpe County EMS.
County commission chairman
Anthony Dove said Lewis was
“very sharp” in an approximate
two-hour interview with the public
safety advisory board.
“I’m glad we put the board
together because they came up with
a lot of pertinent questions,” said
Dove, who noted that Lewis has
worked for EMS in urban and rural
settings.
If approved by the BOC, Lewis
will replace long-time director
Dwayne Patton, who resigned in
January.

Volunteer group aims to help Madison
County deal with major emergencies
By Margie Richards

W hen a rare heavy snowfall blan
keted Madison County in March
2009, many were left in the cold
and dark. There were many calls to 911, which
overwhelmed the resources of those working to
clear roads, restore power, provide emergency
care and maintain law enforcement.
In response to this, a group of volunteers, with citizens
from all walks of life including laypersons, emergency
workers, law enforcement, clergy and others is working
to make sure additional help is there the next time there
is such a crisis.
The Madison County Crisis Response Team has been
organized to help people leam about disaster prepared
ness for hazards that may impact the area and to train
volunteers in basic disaster response skills, such as fire
safety, light search and rescue, counseling, team organi
zation, and disaster medical operations. The group, with
about 25 active members currently, has been meeting for
about six months.
“After the snowstorm, Ryan Melton (Madison Area
Resource Team leader) and I were talking about the
need to develop something in the county to help the
citizenry understand what’s available in such situations
and to get (others) trained that could help in an emer
gency,” said Rev. Bill Coady, pastor of Gordon’s Chapel

Workers to visit
HOMES OF THOSE
WHO don’t RESPOND
By Ben Munro
ben@mainstreetnews.com
Those who ignore their
census packets may hear a
knock at their door.
Starting May 1, census
officials will send workers to
those residences whose occu
pants don’t return their cen
sus questionnaires, accord
ing to Sandra Webb, who
is heading up census prepa
ration efforts for Madison
County.
Webb said she’s encourag
ing people to start watching
out for census forms being
mailed. Madison County res
idents should begin receiving
census packets this week or
next week.
“Don’t throw them away,
don’t lay them down,” Webb
said. “Go ahead and fill it out,
and put it back in the mail
and you can be left alone.”
For those who offer no
response, workers will make
two attempts to obtain house
hold information at these
residences before trying to
retrieve the information from
neighbors.
The questionnaire includes
10 questions, none of which
