•Moon’s Grove Baptist Church will
hold its annual Homecoming celebration
on Sunday, May 7. Sunday School will be
at 10 a.m. and worship will follow at 11
a.m. Danny Lord and Debra Burgess (for
merly of the Forgiven Quartet) will be in
concert in the worship service. Following
the service, all are invited to stay for a cov
ered dish lunch featuring Moon’s Grove’s
“world famous’’ barbecue and stew and
a great time of fellowship, making new

•Waggoner Grove Baptist Church,

members. Dinner will be served 1:30 to
2:30 p.m.

have a homecoming celebration with
Old Fashioned Day attire on May
21 at 10:30 a.m. Jordan’s River will
perform. A homecoming meal will
be served after the worship service.

•Colbert United Methodist
Church will have a “Maker Fun
Factory: Created by God, Built for
a Purpose VBS,” Sunday, June 4
through Wednesday, June 7, 5:30 to
8:30 p.m. “All children who have
completed grades Pre-K through fifth
grade are invited to join us for a
great time of discovering that God
made them for a purpose,” organiz

•Gordon’s Chapel United

its next clothes closet opening Friday,
May 19, from 9 to 10 a.m. The clothes
closet is located inside the green build
ing just past the Sanford Community
Center on 6469 Nowhere Road, Hull.
“Please note that our clothes closet
is open to those who personally need
clothes and is not meant to be used
for the purpose of resale,” organizers
said.
•Gholston Missionary Baptist
Church, 45 Gholston Church Road,
Comer, will celebrate its 134th year
Church Anniversary on Sunday, May
7. The guest speaker will be Pastor
Douglas Watkins of Heaven Bound
Ministries. The program begins at 3
p.m. Dinner will be served from 1:30
to 2:30 p.m.
•Gordon’s Chapel UMC, of Hull,
announces that it will hold its month
ly food giveaway at the Sanford
Community Center, 6495 Nowhere
Road, on the following Fridays in
2017: May 19, June 16, July 21, Aug.
18, Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17, and
Dec. 15 from 9 to 10 a.m. “These food
giveaways are held for those who are
in need of food for their immediate
family,” church leaders said. “Please
note that all food is distributed on
a first come, first serves basis and
is fully funded by Gordon’s Chapel
UMC, which works in coordination
with the NEGA Food Bank.”
•Jones Chapel United Methodist
Church - Sunday, May 7, the pastor
will preach from John 10 and 1 Peter
2. The sacrament of holy communion
will be celebrated during the service,
church officials said. Children (CIA)
and youth groups will meet at 5 p.m.
in the sanctuary. The Spring Chicken
BBQ, sponsored by the United
Methodist Men, will be held May 13
and tickets are $8 each, pick up only.
Vacation Bible School will be May 30
through June 1. The church is located

•Moon’s Grove Baptist
Church will hold its monthly
“There’s Hope for the Hungry” food
distribution on the fourth Wednesday
of each month. The following dates
for 2017 are: May 24, June 28, July
26, Aug. 23, Sept. 27, Oct. 25 and Nov.
22. Church officials say the clothes
closet will also be open on these
dates. The church is located at 1985
Moon’s Grove Church Road, Colbert.

Association’s regular meetings are
held on the first Monday of each
month at 9 a.m. at the Ila Restaurant

Athens Human Rights Festival set for weekend
The 2017 Athens Human
Rights Festival (AHRF) is
set for this weekend and
will include speeches from
two renowned Civil Rights
activists.
Dr. Charles Steele Jr.,
President Emeritus and
CEO of the Southern
Christian Leadership
Conference (SCLC) and
Representative Tyrone L
Brooks Sr. (ret) will speak
at 2:40 p.m., Saturday,
May 6 on the outdoor stage
located at Broad Street and
College Avenue across from
the UGA Arch. The two
day event is free and open
to the public. Saturday May
6 from 10 a.m. to midnight
and Sunday, May 7 from
1-11 p.m.
Steele was bom and raised
in Tuscaloosa, Ala., received
his bachelor’s from F.T.
Bozeman school of Ministry
and Global Evangelical
Christian College of
Louisiana, his Master’s
from F. T. Bozeman Global
Evangelical Seminary and
Doctorate degree from
Mt. Carmel Theological
Seminary. In 1985, Steele
served two terms on the
Tuscaloosa City Council
and in 1994 was elected to
the Alabama state senate.
His dedication to serving
his constituents is evident
through his many worth
while and tangible accom
plishments in Tuscaloosa
County and West Alabama.
While serving his third
term he resigned to become
the National Vice President
of the SCLC. the Atlanta
based organization cofound
ed by Dr. Martin Luther
King. Jr. He served in this
position for five years. In
August 2013, Dr. Steele was
nominated again and made
history by becoming the
first SCLC President and
CEO to ever hold this posi
tion twice. Throughout Dr.
Steele’s many travels he has
visited five continents and
countless countries. Some
of his most notable visits
include: Jerusalem, Israel;
Moscow, Russia: Berlin,
Germany; Rome, Italy and
many countries within the
continent of Africa. He also
authored the book, “Easier
to Obtain Than to Maintain:
The Globalization of Civil
Rights.”
Brooks began his career in
public service as an activist
for civil and human rights at
the age of 15 as a volunteer
with the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference
(SCLC). He became a full
time staffer of the organiza
tion in 1967 with Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Under Dr.
King. Rev. Ralph David
Abernathy, Rev. Hosea
Williams and Dr. Joseph E.
Lowery, he served in many
positions, nationally and
locally. Brooks has worked
his whole life to eradicate
racism, sexism, illiteracy
and injustice. After serving
35 years, he retired in 2015
as representative of House
District 55 in the Georgia
General Assembly to give
full-time focus on his work
to solve and bring justice
in the 1946 Moore’s Ford
Bridge Lynching case in
Monroe, GA (a cold-case).

exchange of information,
street theater, children’s
activities, and music pro
moting equality and jus
tice, peace and goodwill.

Colbert pageant
set for June 3
The 2017 Colbert Canna Pageant is set for Saturday,
June 3 at the Colbert Auditorium.
To be eligible, contestants must be in one of the three
age groups: ages 4-6, grades four to six or grades nine
to 12. They must also live on a Colbert or Hull mailing
route or Colbert or Hull/Sanford school bus route. The
entry fee is $50 and can be paid by a sponsor. Entry
forms can be picked up at the Bread Basket in Colbert or

Foxfire Heritage
Day set for May 13
Foxfire Heritage Day will be held Saturday, May 13,
9 am. to 4 p.m. at the Foxfire Museum and Heritage
Center, 98 Foxfire Lane, Mountain City.
The event is a celebration of southern Appalachian
culture, according to organizers and will include inter
pretive demonstrations of weaving, blacksmithing, bas
ketry, open hearth cooking, broom making, bark berry
baskets, com shuck dolls, early engines and much more.

Blood drive set for May 9
A Red Cross blood drive will be held at the Danielsville
Fire Hall May 9 from 2-7 p.m.
Five finalists named for ‘2016
Songwriter of the Year Award’
Five Athens-area musicians have been named finalists for
the new Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award for songs
released in 2016.
The award, named in honor of Vic Chesnutt, an internation
ally renowned singer-songwriter from Athens, is presented
by the Rotary Club of the Classic City of Athens, a civic and
service organization made up of local community leaders. The
Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award includes a $1,000
prize and eight hours of studio recording time to the winner,
and each of the four additional finalists receive three hours of
studio recording time.
The five finalists are Drew Albenesius, Dana Downs,
Andrew Huang, Erin Lovett, and Sarah Zuniga. Each will per
form and explain their nominated songs, and the winner will
be announced at an evening awards event held at The Foundry
in downtown Athens Thursday, May 11, 7-10 p.m. The event
includes live music by the finalists and by other area musi
cians, including Grant Cowan, Lingua Franca, Cortez Garza,
Cicada Rhythm, and T. Hardy Morris. The event is ticketed
($10 general admission/$12 at the door, from The Foundry)
and open to the public (18 and older).

Republican Party to meet May 18
The Madison County Republican Party will meet Thursday,
May 18, at the Madison County Senior Center on Hwy. 98 in
Danielsville. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a meet and greet. The
meeting begins at 7 p.m. with guests, Kenneth Darryl Brown
and Ben Grayson. Mr. Brown is a retired Navy officer, entre
preneur, and candidate for First Vice Chair of the GAGOP with
a message designed to build on the momentum of the GOP
since the last election, officials said. Mr. Grayson is the chair
man of the College Republicans at UGA. He will discuss life
on campus for conservative students at UGA, officials noted.
