Athens Human Rights Festival set for weekend The 2017 Athens Human Rights Festival (AHRF) is set for this weekend and will include speeches from two renowned Civil Rights activists. Dr. Charles Steele Jr., President Emeritus and CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Representative Tyrone L Brooks Sr. (ret) will speak at 2:40 p.m., Saturday, May 6 on the outdoor stage located at Broad Street and College Avenue across from the UGA Arch. The two day event is free and open to the public. Saturday May 6 from 10 a.m. to midnight and Sunday, May 7 from 1-11 p.m. Steele was bom and raised in Tuscaloosa, Ala., received his bachelor’s from F.T. Bozeman school of Ministry and Global Evangelical Christian College of Louisiana, his Master’s from F. T. Bozeman Global Evangelical Seminary and Doctorate degree from Mt. Carmel Theological Seminary. In 1985, Steele served two terms on the Tuscaloosa City Council and in 1994 was elected to the Alabama state senate. His dedication to serving his constituents is evident through his many worth while and tangible accom plishments in Tuscaloosa County and West Alabama. While serving his third term he resigned to become the National Vice President of the SCLC. the Atlanta based organization cofound ed by Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. He served in this position for five years. In August 2013, Dr. Steele was nominated again and made history by becoming the first SCLC President and CEO to ever hold this posi tion twice. Throughout Dr. Steele’s many travels he has visited five continents and countless countries. Some of his most notable visits include: Jerusalem, Israel; Moscow, Russia: Berlin, Germany; Rome, Italy and many countries within the continent of Africa. He also authored the book, “Easier to Obtain Than to Maintain: The Globalization of Civil Rights.” Brooks began his career in public service as an activist for civil and human rights at the age of 15 as a volunteer with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He became a full time staffer of the organiza tion in 1967 with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Under Dr. King. Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, Rev. Hosea Williams and Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, he served in many positions, nationally and locally. Brooks has worked his whole life to eradicate racism, sexism, illiteracy and injustice. After serving 35 years, he retired in 2015 as representative of House District 55 in the Georgia General Assembly to give full-time focus on his work to solve and bring justice in the 1946 Moore’s Ford Bridge Lynching case in Monroe, GA (a cold-case). The Athens Human Rights Festival, an all vol unteer non-profit grass roots organization, is ded icated to providing a public forum for free speech, the exchange of information, street theater, children’s activities, and music pro moting equality and jus tice, peace and goodwill. Colbert pageant set for June 3 The 2017 Colbert Canna Pageant is set for Saturday, June 3 at the Colbert Auditorium. To be eligible, contestants must be in one of the three age groups: ages 4-6, grades four to six or grades nine to 12. They must also live on a Colbert or Hull mailing route or Colbert or Hull/Sanford school bus route. The entry fee is $50 and can be paid by a sponsor. Blood drive set for May 9 A Red Cross blood drive will be held at the Danielsville Fire Hall May 9 from 2-7 p.m. Five finalists named for ‘2016 Songwriter of the Year Award’ Five Athens-area musicians have been named finalists for the new Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award for songs released in 2016. The award, named in honor of Vic Chesnutt, an internation ally renowned singer-songwriter from Athens, is presented by the Rotary Club of the Classic City of Athens, a civic and service organization made up of local community leaders. The Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award includes a $1,000 prize and eight hours of studio recording time to the winner, and each of the four additional finalists receive three hours of studio recording time. The five finalists are Drew Albenesius, Dana Downs, Andrew Huang, Erin Lovett, and Sarah Zuniga. Each will per form and explain their nominated songs, and the winner will be announced at an evening awards event held at The Foundry in downtown Athens Thursday, May 11, 7-10 p.m. The event includes live music by the finalists and by other area musi cians, including Grant Cowan, Lingua Franca, Cortez Garza, Cicada Rhythm, and T.
