Cigars have been a gift tradition since the 1600s, so this is perfect timing for Christ mas. There will be discounts for cigars and bottles that are sold together. MOAS hosting New Year adoption party in Athens on Jan. 11 The Madison-Oglethorpe Animal Shelter will host a New Year adoption party on Jan. 11 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Normal town Brew ing Company in Athens. The party will feature live music, food trucks, local beer and adoptable pets from MOAS. The pets will be available for adoption on site. Normaltown Brewing Co. is located at 425 Barber St, Athens. The Sharing and Caring Meal Program in Comer will serve a holiday meal on Satur day, Dec. 21, beginning at 11 a.m. The free meal will be available to anyone at the red bam in Yarbrough Park. “Our menu this week features pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, homemade Bruns wick stew and fruit cobbler for dessert,” said Nell Gantt Browne, the program’s organizer. The “Sharing and Caring” effort is free and open to everyone, and is “dedicated to reaching out to people in need of a good, healthy meal in our community,” according to organizers. The meals will be served on a first-come, first-served basis and will be in take-away UPCOMING EVENTS Outside of hosting all of J/he Athens Rock Lobsters’ hockey team’s home games, Akins Ford Arena will host a number of other no table events: AEW Collision, Jan. 11: •All Elite Wrestling Collision will be held at the arena, and will feature a roster of male and female wrestlers with a wide variety of wrestling styles and “twist-filled” plots. Parker McCollum, Jan. 23: • Akins Ford Arena will host one of its first concerts as country musician Parker Mc Collum takes the stage for his “What Kin- da Man” tour. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and will feature opening acts from Kameron Marlowe and Laci Kaye Booth. Tickets start at $26. Tom Segura, Jan. 30: •One of the biggest names in comedy, Tom Segura, will serve as Akins Ford Are na’s inaugural comedy show perfonner, as a part of his “Come Together” tour. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are on sale containers. Guests can eat at picnic tables at the park or take their food home. People who are home-bound also can request that a meal be delivered directly to their home. This community outreach program is be ing paid for and sponsored by Browne, and the City of Comer supports the community engagement. Madison County High School Students active in the Anchor Club (Pilot Club) are also assisting Browne with the “Sharing and Caring” meal. Cindy Jones is the MCFB pres ident and Lauren Lord is the MCFB office manag er. MCFB received the GFB Rewarding Ex cellence in Ag Pro gram (REAP) Harvester Award in the organiza tion’s large membership division. GFB’s REAP award honors county Farm Bureaus for the or ganization/membership, advocacy, leadership development, education & outreach activities they did between Sept. 1, 2023, and Aug. 31, 2024. St. Mary’s offers Freedom from Smoking course starting in January Blood donation opportunity coming up in Danielsville St. Mary’s Respiratory Services will offer the American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking program starting Jan. 7 for any adult who wishes to quit smoking. The program will be facilitated by registered re spiratory therapist and certified instructor Todd Drake, an ex-smoker. Enrollment is now open. The class will meet at St. Mary’s Outpa tient Diagnostic, Rehab and Wellness Center, located at 2470 Daniells Bridge Road, Build ing 300, Athens, on Tuesdays, Jan. 7 through Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. The center is located just off the Oconee Connector near Loop 10 and Epps Bridge Crossing. Enrollment costs $60 per person. The American Lung Association is the oldest voluntary health organization in the United States. The Freedom from Smoking class includes eight sessions and features a step-by-step plan for quitting smoking. It was first introduced more than 30 years ago and has helped over 1 million Americans end their addiction to tobacco. In a study conduct ed by Fordham University Graduate School of Business, Freedom from Smoking was ranked the most effective smoking cessation program. “Quitting is a process, and Freedom from Smoking is individualized for each partic ipant,” Drake said. “Because no single ap proach is effective for all smokers, the class includes a variety of evidence-based cessa tion techniques. We facilitate the sessions in a small-group setting, so participants get per sonalized attention as well as support from their peers.” According to evaluation studies conducted by the American Lung Association, partici pants experience immediate health benefits and are six times more likely to be smoke- tree one year later than those who quit on their own. “The best benefit of quitting smoking is that it gives you the chance to live a long, healthy, happy life,” said Drake. “This class can be a real benefit to people all across the communities we serve.” For more information or to apply for the program, call Drake at 706.389.2915 or visit http://www.lung.org/stop-smoking/how-to- quit/getting-help/. As holiday celebrations continue into December, the American Red Cross encourages donors to keep the blood supply top of mind by giving blood or platelets this month. Type O negative blood donors and those giv ing platelets are especially urged to give now to help ensure patients can continue to receive the care they need in the coming weeks. Record-breaking November travel is expected to carry into the new year, which could cause some potential do nors to put off blood donation until after the holiday season. In addition to millions of Americans traveling to spend holidays with loved ones, ex tended vacations are also surging in popularity at a time when fewer peo ple may be available to give lifesaving blood products. Bring joy to someone facing a medical emergency; give something that means something with a blood or platelet donation. There will be a blood donation op portunity in Danielsville on Dec. 31, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Madison County Library, 1315 Highway 98 West. There also a wide range of donation opportunities in Clarke County and other surrounding areas throughout December.
