DECEMBER 18. 2024 Crime Road rage incident in Colbert leads to physical altercation, suspect flees Authorities in Madi son County are seeking a suspect involved in a road rage incident that led to a violent con frontation in downtown Colbert on Sunday af ternoon. The suspect, who fled the scene with visible injuries, is de scribed as a white male in his 30s. The altercation occurred around 12:30 p.m. when a 28-year-old Comer man reported that a driver in a white Ford F-250 began tailgat ing him while travel ing on Georgia High way 72. The suspect then allegedly began brake-checking and gesturing obscenely to ward the Comer man. To avoid further con frontation, the Comer man turned onto Fourth Street near Colbert City Hall and came to a stop. The suspect followed him into the area, parked, and immediate ly exited his vehicle to physically assault the victim, according to a sheriff’s report. The Comer man re ported defending him self by punching the suspect in the face, causing visible injuries to the attacker, includ ing cuts to his eye, lip and nose. Blood was reportedly splattered on the victim during the fight, although he was not injured. A woman who witnessed the inci dent stopped her vehi cle and shouted that she was calling 911 while the altercation contin ued. The suspect quickly retreated to his truck and fled the scene at high speed, sideswip- ing the Comer man’s truck in the process. He nearly collided with the woman’s vehicle as he drove away recklessly, the deputy reported. Two other women who also witnessed the incident told authori ties they saw the attack unfold and confirmed that it appeared un provoked. They noted that the suspect, who was covered in his own blood, left the scene in the truck, while the victim was reported to be covered in blood as well. While the Comer man declined to pursue charges, he did want the attacker to compen sate him for damages to his vehicle. The woman who called 911, how ever, expressed con cerns about her safety and that of her children, stating she wanted to press charges against the suspect for his reck less actions. The suspect was de scribed as a heavy-set white male in his 30s, wearing a University of Georgia football jersey and glasses. He was ac companied by an older white male passenger. The truck was last seen traveling on Colbert Danielsville Road. In vestigators are continu ing their search for the suspect. The owner said approxi mately $30 in quarters were missing from the main tenance room. •accident involving a deer on Hwy. 174, Dan ielsville, where the severely injured deer was dis patched. •accident involving a deer on Rogers Mill Rd., Danielsville, where a Madison County School Sys tem bus struck a deer. •abandoned vehicle causing a traffic hazard on Hudson Rivers Church Rd., Danielsville. An Athens resident received the statutory maximum prison sen tence allowed under federal guidelines for the sexual exploitation of a 7-year-old child re sulting from a Project Safe Childhood investi gation. Chris Adam Valen tine, 37, was sentenced to serve 360 months in prison to be followed by a lifetime of supervised release and $90,000 res titution by U.S. District Judge Tilman E. “Tripp” Self, III on Dec. 10. In addition, Valentine will have to register as a sex offender upon release from prison. Valen tine previously pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a child on May 28. There is no parole in the feder al system. “Our office is deter mined to identify and remove child predators from our communities and hold them fully accountable for their heinous crimes,” said U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary. “Protecting the most vulnerable citizens from harm is a priority for law enforcement at every level.” “Thanks to the diligent efforts of Homeland Se curity Investigations and its law enforcement partners, this predator will now spend three decades behind bars for his appalling actions,” said Steven N. Schrank, the Special Agent in Charge of HSI Atlanta, which covers Georgia and Alabama. “This in vestigation underscores our commitment to pro tecting vulnerable in dividuals and pursuing justice for those who seek to exploit and harm children.” “Cases like these ex emplify the value of partnerships between local, state and fed eral agencies,” said Athens-Clarke Coun ty Police Chief Jerry Saulters. “These hei nous crimes will not be tolerated in our commu nity. We will continue to work with our partners to protect the children of this community and will pursue those who prey on them.” According to the plea agreement, Valentine admitted that between Jan. 1, 2022, and Dec. 31, 2022, he used his cellular phone to film a 7-year-old child engage in sexual conduct with an adult male. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nation wide initiative to com bat the growing epi demic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Ex ploitation and Obsceni ty Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to locate, ap prehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue vic tims. The case was inves tigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Ath- ens-Clarke County Po lice Department. Assistant U.S. Attor ney Daniel Peach pros ecuted the case for the Government.
