Mrs. Stone was born on November 7, 1954, in Royston, daughter of the late James Brantley Hart and the late Betty Sue Murray Hart. She was a weav er having worked at Kendall ans was of the Holiness faith. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Leland Stone; and brother, Sammy Hart. Survivors include her brothers, Randy Hart (Kar en), Hull, Keith Hart (Carolyn), Winterville, and Mike Hart (Donna), Toccoa,; sisters, Dorothy Kirk (Daryl), Lawrenceville, Patsy Bridges (Greg), Royston, and Cynthia Hart, Royston; sister-in-law, Joann Hart, Royston; and a number of nieces and nephews. Week of March 3-9 Shizelle Antoinette Threlkeld CARLTON — Shizelle Antoinette Threlkeld, 52, Carlton died on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. She was a daughter of the late Shirley May Sales and Anthony Jo seph Johnson. Shizelle was born in Hawaii and moved to Madison Coun ty when she was 10. Her life revolved around her two grandsons and her family. She was a proud U.S. Navy veteran’s wife and was always very involved in her children’s extracurricular activities when they were school aged. Shizelle was an avid fan of the University of Georgia Bulldogs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Anthony Troy Sales; grandfa ther, Fausto Acoba Sales; and grandmother, Gertrude Nicolas Sales. Survivors include her husband, Daniel Threlkeld; children, Wade Threlkeld and Leslie Gamer (Kyle); grandsons, Jake and Beau Gamer; and her siblings, Kelly McElreath, Robin McElreath, Kim Waldrop, Samuel “Sammy” Newhouse, Brian Newhouse and Kaieme Newhouse. Week of March 3-9 Rachel Thompson Rachel Thompson, 99, a dedicated educator and beloved member of her community, passed away on Sunday, Febmary 23, 2025. Born in Bethlehem on May 20, 1925, Rachel de voted her life to teaching and leaving a lasting im pact on countless young minds throughout her 40- year career in education. Rachel began her ed ucational journey at the age of four when she embraced the value of learning throughout her life. She graduated from the University of Georgia and started her teaching career at the age of 18. Ms. Thompson served at Bethlehem Elementary School as an educator and retired as a reading specialist from the Barrow County School System, where her com mitment educating students was met with profound appreciation by students, parents and colleagues alike. Her caring nature extended beyond the classroom; as a lifelong member of Bethlehem First United Meth odist Church, she was actively involved in the choir and dedicated many years to teaching Sunday School. Her contributions to both her church and community epitomized her belief in the importance of education and service. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her father, Henry Thompson; mother, Alma Jo Thompson; sister, Frances Thompson Haywood; and nephew, George Haygood. Ms. Thompson is survived by her nieces, Sarah Hay good and Rebecca Henson. Funeral service: Friday, March 7, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Week of March 3-9 Johnny Hubert Towler Jr. GRIFFIN — Johnny Hubert Towler Jr. passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, in his home in Griffin. He would have been 90 years of age on June 14, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marlene “Polly” Keith; and two sons, Kenneth Lee Towler, Griffin, and John Christopher Towler. Tallahassee, Florida. A third son, Keith Michael Towler, de ceased on February 5, 2020 is buried in the Towler Family Cemetery in Monroe. Johnny is a native of Monroe, born in and grow ing up in Pleasant Valley, son of Irene Higginboth- an Towler and John Hubert Towler. His sister Ann Towler Brown resides in Rutledge. Johnny graduated from Monroe High School in 1954 where he was a member of 4-H, FFA and on the football team in 1952. At 16 he joined the Georgia National Guard, moved to Atlanta and se cured a job at Lockheed Marietta where he trained as a hydraulic mechanic. Johnny left Lockheed to accept an opportunity at Atlanta U.S. Army Depot (now Ft. Gilem) as an aircraft mechanic. During the following years he continued with the Georgia National Guard, experiencing various training exercises. His first introduction to Army aviation was during his years at the Depot where he decided to apply for a commission in the Army, attending Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning and earning the rank of 2nd Lt. An opportunity for continued training opened to him when more fixed wing aircraft was utilized in the Army, and he applied for and completed Flight School at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, in 1963. He later trained in OV-1 Mohawks, the Army’s turbo-prop jets carrying sophisticated infra-red and SLAR equipment. He was stationed in Vung Tau Vietnam in 1964-65 accomplishing 125 missions during his tour. He completed 1,000 hours in Mohawks as of March 1983. After his promotion to Captain he be came a Mohawk instructor and instrument examin er until his retirement from the Guard in 1974. His military awards include: Senior Aviator Wings; Air Medal with 9 Oak Leaf Clusters; Viet nam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam Galantry with Palm; Army Commendation; Armed Forces Expeditionary Ser vice; National Defense Service; and Georgia Na tional Guard Defense on Foreign Soil. Addition ally, Georgia National Guard Honest and Faithful Award; Armed Forces Reserve; and Georgia Dis tinguished Service on Foreign Soil. Following military retirement, he accepted a po sition with Marsh and McLennan Companies as a construction safety engineer as Senior Vice Pres ident of the Construction Safety Services Group. His career with Marsh led him to his second retire ment after 22 years. Johnny and his wife Polly built a home in Co nyers where they lived 30 years, until a decision was made for a smaller home in Sun City Peachtree, Griffin, where they reside at this time. Funeral service: Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Towler Family Cemetery.
