PAGE 4B - THE MADISON COUNTY (GA) JOURNAL, WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 2025 Church Life issues: Looking at living from a biblical world view Church News Week of May 28 By Members of the Madison County Ministerial Association (MCMA) A living sacrifice in light of sacrificial service The year was 1955 and the late Reverend Billy Graham found himself in Boston reflecting on a recent memory from a trip overseas while visiting American troops. He recalled standing helplessly next to a nineteen-year-old American man who was taking his final breaths far from home. Graham ex plained how this caused him to wrestle with the fact that millions of Americans were getting to live on carefree as this young life beside him came to an end. Graham professed to the Veterans of Foreign Wars assembled before him that day it was at this moment he realized some must die for America so others might live for it. He would go on to say, “they have handed us a torch, we have a responsibility to see that they have not died in vain.” In Romans 12:1-2, the Apostle Paul urges believ ers to present their bodies as a “living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper wor ship.” He calls believers not to conform to the patterns of this world, but to be trans formed by the renewing of our minds. This echoes the spirit of Memorial Day: just as we are to embrace the freedoms secured by those who have offered themselves By Pastor Blaine Seagraves fully for a cause greater than themselves, so are we, as Christians, called to offer ourselves fully to God with neither being a one-time act of dying. Instead, they are daily commitments to live in remembrance of sacrifices given on our behalf. Grills were hot last weekend. Lakes were crowd ed, but do we decorate our lives to reflect gratitude for the freedom provided to us by those who as Abraham Lincoln said, “gave the last full measure of devotion,” when the weekend comes to an end? What about when the calendar turns to June? Originally known as “Decoration Day,” Memori al Day began with the covering of graves of fallen soldiers - a tradition of honor thankfully still held by many today. It is one thing to stop and decorate a grave of one who has fallen, annually, never giving it a second thought until it is time to do so again. It is another to pause annually, while living out our freedoms in daily honor of their memory until it is time to do so again. Tradition is both honorable and admirable, but transformation is found in the space between traditions. Is it found in you? As a citizen? As a Christian? May we not merely remember with words but re spond with transformed lives and may the memory of those who died in service inspire us to live lives marked by sacrificial love, courage, and unwaver ing devotion to God’s purposes as we work through life’s issues in this land we are sojourning together. The initial proclamation stated that the day was to remember “the memory of our heroic dead who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes.” As John D. Wilsey wrote in an article entitled The Debt We Owe, "[P]atriotism is expressed through gratitude for real people who made actual sacrifices so that you and I might enjoy tangible blessings - and hand those blessings down to our children and grandchildren.” This week, remember those who died to keep us free.
