We have just celebrated our Independence Day, hon oring the liberties we have in the USA. One of those guaranteed by the First Amendment of our US Constitu tion is freedom of association. While the freedom is not specifically mentioned there, the first amendment, as interpreted by the Supreme Court of the United States, includes such association in the right of free speech which the amendment address es. This means that we the people can gather to express ourselves publicly without fear of punishment, as well as join together in groups of common beliefs and values. These expressions and gatherings can include families, churches, schools, civic organizations, public and pri vate meetings, political parties and more. Freedom of association is the basis of a fundamental building block of our nation called community. It is in freely expressive and like-minded groups that we for mulate what we believe. We then invest those beliefs into creating values for living in community; that is, with others in unity that builds up the group for the good of each and all. The Apostle Paul notes in 1 Corinthians 10:23 (NASB), “All things are permitted, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted, but not all things build people up.” He means, particularly for followers of Christ, that we are free to do anything we want, but not everything we may want to say or do is good to build up us or others we influence and affect. In fact, what we want naturally and selfishly may not be constructive at all but destructive to us or them. The Holy Spirit of God guides believers to want the will of God in our communities, so it is easier to keep our attitudes and behaviors in the range that God desires to edify or build persons in those groups. He tells His believers to live together “in the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:3 (NASB). Those who are not yet believers need to discover other means of restraint and motivation to determine what is right and wrong and to act accordingly. Better still, they need to come around to God’s biblical ways of thinking and be having. So, let me ask believers in the Lord to inquire of Him what His attitude and specific actions are for you in the groups in which you freely associate. Then what you want to say or do is good for you and others, not simply what you want without His involvement and guidance. By Greg Schillo Let me ask those who are not yet believers in Christ to con sider that He loved you enough to die as your Savior from sin and to be available to lead you into a life of peace and joy on earth and an eternal home with Him. You can receive Him by faith to be your personal Sav ior and Lord. Then you can base your choices for good on His eternally perfect character and unending love for you and others. For both the believer and yet-to-be believer, God wants to give you the freedom and ability to find, join and abide in communities that build and grow you and others with mutual love, respect, un derstanding and encouragement according to His Word, the Bible. Isn’t such liberty to associate freely and con structively at the highest level worth claiming by believ ing in Him? Isn’t building excellent communities a benefit to everyone in Madison County? The process starts and grows inside each of us. I invite you to continue build ing community together. Ask God to show you how. He will. _ Call 245-2695 24 Hour Obituary News Compliments of Gruitt Funeral Some, Inc. “Locally Owned and Operated Since 1905” 47 Franklin Springs St. Royston, GA 30662 (706) 245-7234 Locals awarded degrees from MSU Approximately 3,500 students recently received degrees from Mississip pi State University at the spring commencement ceremony. It came from Satan, the father of lies, and it was about God. The lie promised Eve that she would “be like God” if she ate the forbidden fruit. One tragic consequence resulting from the proliferation of social media is the dramatic increase in the spread of lies. It seems that people no longer see the need to “spin” the truth when an outright lie will do. At ACS, we are training our young people to discern truth. This may be one of the more important tools they will carry with them throughout their lives. Real or not real? It can be a question with eternal consequences.
