Mr. D. A. Mcßrydc Is
dud By Deat&.
Mr. Daniel A. Mcßryde, one
of Vidalia’s best known and most
jMghly respected citizens, passed
away in death at his home here
Saturday night, about 10 o’clock,
after suffering for some time
rfrom. an attack of grippe which
'brought on other complications.
Mr. Mcßryde was one of the
pioneer citizens of Vidalia, the
town having been built near his
rfarin, where he had resided
many years before the town was
.started. He was sixty-four
years old and no man in this sec
tion was better known or more
highly respected. His friends
were legion and his death occa
sioned much sorrow and regret.
Mr. Mcßrytie’s parents were
among the early Scotch settlers
of this section and, consequently,
he leaves a large family connect
ion, besides many friends, to
mourn his death. Os his imme
diate family he leaves a wife, one
daughter, Mrs. V. B. Herring,
and two sons, Messrs. W. J. and
D. W. Mcßryde, all of this city.
A large concourse of sorrow
ing friends attended the burial,
which occurred at the new ceme
tery Sunday afternoon. The
funeral services were conducted
at the grave by Rev. J. A. Du
mas, pastor of the Vidalia Bap
tist church. We extend condo
lence to the bereaved family.

The contestants who will rep
resent the Vidalia Collegiate In
stitute at the annual contests of
the First District Accredited
High School Association, which
are to be held at Swainsboro on
May 12th, have been selected,
and the Vidalia school will be
well represented.
In the contests previously held
the V. C. I. lias always secured
several of the honors, and it is
our prediction that this year will
not be an exception to the rule.
The contestants in athletics have
not yet been selected, but the
following pupils have been chosen
to represent the V. C. I. in the
literary contests:
Recitation, Miss Henrietta
Walker: Spelling, Mr. Barney
Averitt; Music, Miss Geneveive
French; Essay, (Boys) Mr. Fred
Holmes; Essay, (Girls) Miss Hen
rietta Walker; Declamation, Mr.
Wilcox Mathews.
Quite a number of students of
the Institute and Vidalia people
will accompany the contestants
to Swainsboro, and a low rate for
the trip will be secured. Prac
tically every accredited high
school in the First District will
have representatives at Swains
boro, and the contests this year
promise to-be the most interest
ing in the history of the associ
ation.
An Early Oat Crop.
Dr. John M. Meadows, who is
one of the county's most pr g es
sive farmers besides being a
successful physician, began har
vesting his oat crop last Monday.
Despite the fact that the crop
matured several days before the
usual time in this section, it is
said that the yield will be not less
than fifty bushels per acre.
All small grain as well as corn
can be successfully grown in
Toombs county and our farmers
are beginning to learn that diver
sified cyjps is the proper method
of farming in this section.
