AGRICULTURE.' The Grasses and Pastures in Georgia. On all lands in Georgia, with a good dry subsoil, clover will grow well, if the soil be naturally or artificially rich enough. In northwestern Georgia, on fresh land, clover does admirably. In middle Georgia heavy manuring is gen erally necessary, the cost of which may be repaid by its application to wheat with which the clover is sowed. It must be lightly grazed during the heat of sum mer, but grazing may be commenced in April, interrupted in July and August, and resumed in September, continuing until January. The stubble fields will carry the stock well during the inter ruption. Hcrdsgrass and timothy thrive well on rich bottom lands of a close texture throughout the State. The most valua ble of all forage plants is lucerne. This grows as well in Georgia as in I ranee, and in the quantity and qualify of the hay produced is unrivalled. On lands made very rich it may be cut five times during the summer, yielding a ton at each cutting, commencing in April.— The price of hay in Georgia is never less than twenty dollars per ton ; now it is more than twice the amount. On ma nured lands blue grass, meadow, oat grass, orchard grass, vtjrnal grass, grow during the winter. If these are kept shut up from June until December, and stock is then turned upon them, horses, mules, cattle, and sheep will need no oth er food, and will keep fat. They thus do their own mowing and hay raising. What a diminution of expense in stock raising. What a saving in costly barns. W T hat a singular advantage of climate. — The writer exhibited at the State fair five three-year old Ayrshire heifers from parents brought from Scotland by him self, which never had been fed beyond what they had obtained by grazing, and had never been under a shelter. They were well grown, perfectly fat, and quite equal to heifers of the same age in Scot land. If it will pay to manure a meadow on which the expense of cut ing and curing hay is to be incurred, and also of barn to store it in, much more will it pay to manure land for winter pasture, on which nn equal amount of sGick is kept, with out after expense. When land is made rich and sowed down to winter grass it is quite possible to raise good cattle, colls, and sheep, without any other ex pense than interest on land, salt, and oc casional attention. If these winter pas tures are laid dowr in thinned woodland, the additional advantage is derived of doing away with dead capital in wood land. besides feeding a number of hogs as the acorn and chestnut rarely fad in thinned and pastured woodlands. — lieu. C. W. Howard. Wheat Experiments. —The editor or the Petersburg Index has been test ing different kinds of wheat, and gives the productive capacity of each under high culture. Georgia white, 85 bush els to the acre; Diehl 30 bushels; Amer ican white 40 to 45 bushels; white chaff Mediterranean, moderately productive; Russian amber, 30 t 035 bushels; Hun garian red, 25 bushels; White blue stem, 35 bushels; Poarch, 30 to 35 bush els; Week’s, 25 bushels; Bough ton. 30 to 35 bushels; early May, 25 bushels; Oceanica, 25 bushelr; German amber, 35 to 40 bushels. The editor says it is a shame that our farmers put up with 15 to 20 bushels to the acre, when with proper attention, to the crop it should be no uncommon thing to cut 50 bushels to the acre. Cause and Cure of Poll Evil. — Poll Evil results from neglect or abuse. If the opening into the tumor be con tracted, enlarge it with the knife; shave away all surrounding hair; wash it with Castile soap and tepid water, and apply a solution of carbolic acid and glycerine (twelve or fifteen drops of the acid to an ounce of glycerine) to the part —which will, with attention to the diet and clean liness, effect a cure. Bone Dust for Poultry. —A cor respondent of the Ohio Farmer, says : Last winter I procured two barrels of bone, intending to use it for Irish pota toes and other garden crops. My wife appropriated some of it for her roses in the flower gardon, by simply strewing it on the surface of the ground around the bushes. The fowls have free access to the garden, and were discovered eating the meal very eagerly. Thinking it might be of service to them, we gave them some, for several weeks, and I as sure you it was but a short ame before the eggs began to come in such numbers as we had never known before. Glycerine and its Uses. —Com- paratively but a few years have elapsed since glycerine was thrown away as a waste product from soap and stearine candle works. Now it is one of the most useful products. Tubs and pails satura ted with it will neither shrink nor dry up. Leather soaked in it keeps moist and pliable. It is used for extracting the perfume of flowers, to preserve ani mal substances from decay, and hence is valuable for preserving purposes. It is amployed in pharmacy, dyeing, brewing, liquor making, wine keeping, and a vast variety of other purposes. With nitric acid it forms nitro-glycerine. one of the most powerful explosives known.
