A Plea (or Bird Protection.
John Burroughs and Ernest
Thompson Beton, who are among
the kindliest men as well as the
most gifted naturalists and story
writers in the world, have leaned an
interesting and earnest appeal to
American school ohlldren In behalf
. of the oountry’s wild birds. They
■sk the children to join in urging
the enaotment of a bill now before
Congress, designed to place migra
tory birds under the protection of
the federal government.
This is not a partisan or political
measure, but is intended purely for
the nation’s good. It is based not
merely upon sentiment but upon
sound economio reasons. It will
prove especially valuable to farming
interests and at the Bame time, It
will in no wise impair the rights or
pleasure of the true sportsman.
The appeal of the two great nat-
nrallsts to the children la this: "We
ask yon,” they write, "to get your
parents, teaohers and friends to
sommunicate with the congressman
of your district and the two sena
tors from your state, urging imme
diate lotion on the pending bird-
protection bill—that they may un
derstand how deep is the interest in
it and/how great la the need for it.
If yoh will today get two or three
such messages written and sent
(they need not be long messages, a
simple signed request will do) you
will have the satisfaction of knowing
that you have rendered substantial
help in this great and good cause.”
The ruthless slaughter of birds
oosts American farmers millions of
dollars a year, for birds are the nat
ural and the most efficient protect
ors against orop-degtroying insects,
Georgia is making substantial pro
gress in the important work of game
conservation, for whloh State Game
Warden Meroer la due particular
credit. Throughout the Union,
there is a popular awakening to the
need of adequate laws on this mat
ter; and there ia good reason to be
lieve that it the bill now before oon-
grass is given a fair chance it will
bt-ptiMd.
To this «ad let the ohlldren do
th»!r part.
