In this column last
month, I urged you to vote
for two reasons. First, be
cause we had an opportuni
ty to elect a significant
number of supportative
candidates, and Secondly,
even if they lost and the
margin of their loss was
small it would serve notice
on the political community
of the strength of minori
ty issues. The four candi
dates that I urged you to
vote for finished as follows:
Bert Lance third, Martha
Gaines second, Ray Aber
nathy second, and J. Lowell
Ware, third.
Martha Gaines’ margin
of loss to Ed Garrard in
the race for Georgia Se
nate seat district 37 is to
me the most significant in- ,
dication of the gay vote.
The 37th Senate district has
a significant number of gay
votes, and the results of
the Gaines-Garrard race
confirmed this. Martha
By Bill Smith
Gaines has a strong sup
port from community peo -
pie both black and white,
apartment dwellers, home
owners, feminist groups
and gay people. Mr. Gar
rard’s extensive financial
support and conservative
Morningside voters com
bined to give him a narrow
margin of victory.
Perhaps instead of ur -
ging you to vote, you should
be urged to register to vote
at your county courthouse.
I urge you to do so now! The
November general elec
tion presents few good
choices for people interes
ted in governmental re
form, but we have long
made a choice of the lesser
of the two evils.
Perhaps I am an opti
mist but I firmly believe
that the gay vote in Fulton
County could, if fully re
gistered, provide the mar
gin of victory to many
House and Senate district
races.
Once again I urge you
to vote in the September
Primary run-off elect
ion. I do not feel strong
ly for any particular'
candidate. Many of my
choices are the lesser
of two evils. Whether
you agree with my
choice or not, I urge
you to vote.

Hello again! Things have
really been hopping here
in the Scenic Center Of
the South.
The first real wedding
was held at the Powder
Puff on Wednesday, July
24. Yep, Cherice and
Bobby got hitched at
last. Wonder who’ll be
next? Misti Dawn caught
the bouquet.
, The Powder Puff’s
restaurant is open again.
Chris and Daryl are
running the kitchen and
are really doing a good
job.
Speaking of our
cooks-they sure know
how to make a party
boil. After hours at,
Chris and Daryl’s are
really something else.
So if you’re from out of
town and like to have a
good time, get in touch
with Chris or Daryl,
Gary or Kathy. Why
spend your hard earned
money at a motel when
there are all sorts of
friendly people in
Chattanooga?
‘Enter taintnent has
been fantastic around
here lately. Our own
Daisy Dalton has been
back several times, and
of course, was nothing
but great each time. The
last time, she brought
her revue with her in
cluding . Vickie Lawr
ence, Rita Austin (lost
your wig lately, Rita?)
Dee Dee Ridges, and a
friend of the writer,
f Gale. They were all
great, Daisy! Thanks
for bringing them.
Of course, nothing is
better than our own
girls. You may have no
ticed that the director of
our shows, Cherice Ni
cole, was named Enter
tainer Of The Month,
Congratulations, Che
rice.
Congratulations also
go out to our own Lor
raine North who made
history at the Powder
Puff. Lorraine did a
certain number and the
audience would not let go
and when they finally
did, they were on their
feet screaming and ap
plauding-a real stand
ing ovation. The Rah-
Rah girl of the South,
Cheerleader, has deci
ded to make Chattanoo
ga her home for a while.
She’s been here since
the 14th of June and we
all love her. She and A-
drian are “real”, you
know. Another Nashville
guest with us recently
was everybody’s girl
friend, Billie Marlowe.
She was a very enter
taining guest and we
hope she’ll be back soon.
