Nashville - Contending that she has been left “half woman*
and half man” by Vanderbilt Hospital’s refusal to complete a
sex change operation, Pat Lepley has filed suit seeking
$500,000 damages from the hospital. The suit alleges that
Ms. Lepley underwent a hysterectomy at Madison Hospital
and a mastectomy at Vanderbilt Hospital as steps towards
a complete sex change. Vanderbilt officials first gave—then
withdrew—approval for further surgery to transform her into
a biological male.
Montgomery - A Federal judge says he will not take oral
testimony in a suit filed by a woman who was discharged
against her will by the Army because she married a self-
avowed transexual. The judge said that he will decide the
issues based on the records of former Specialist 4 Marie
Sode’s discharge hearings. The 22 year old former Army
clerk who was stationed at Ft. Rucker, Ala., was dismissed
last July 20 after a review board concluded that she had
homosexual tendencies” because of her marriage to a pre
operative transsexual.
Palm Beach - The Human Resources Committee here is
rewriting its- proposed employment rights ordinance
specifically to exclude gay people. Gay men and women had
been covered in the general wording of the original draft,
which would have made it illegal to fire or refuse to hire any
person except for poor performance or lack of
qualifications. Committee sources told the Miami Herald
that the ordinance is being rewritten because committee
members are “unwilling to become embroiled in a Dade
County like gay rights controversy.” ■,
Winchester, Tenn. - Motions seeking anew trial for Claudius
I. (Bud) Vermilye, convicted of promoting homosexual
activities at a home for wayward boys was presented to the
Circuit Court of Appeals on September 9th. Vermilye,
convicted June 2 of crimes against nature, was charged with
promoting ’and photographing homosexual activities
among youths at Boys Farm, Inc.
Bass, Ark. - An Arkansas based “white Christian”
newsapaper called The Torch has editorially urged the
gassing of gay people. The editorial stated that “It is
becoming increasingly clear to many Americans that
homosexuals can no longer be tolerated and that efforts
should be made to make it a capital crime punishable by
death.” The Torch lists itself as “the Revolutionary
newspaper of the White People’s Committee to Restore
God’s Laws."
Jacksonville, FL - It has been reported in the Florida Times
Union that Florida Senate President Lew Brantley has
decided to run for Mayor of Jacksonville. Brantley is a
supporter of anti-gay Anita Bryant.
Austin, TX - The City Council of Austin has dropped
protection of gay men and women in its new housing
ordinance. Fears of public outcry were among the reasons-
for the exclusion.
Miami - Anita Bryant asserted recently that divorce,
runaways, drugs and pornography are the four destroyers of
the American family. Bryant, according to newspaper
reports, did not mention homosexuality, however, in her
address to the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Nashville, TN - The Tennessee Gay Coalition for Human
Rights has been formed to “combat discrimination inside
and outside the gay community as a result of race, religion,
handicapped status, age, sex, or sexual orientation.” They
are a nonviolent group which chooses to work for these
goals through “public education and research, legislative
change, community organization and involvement, and the
co-ordination of the efforts of gaysr women and minorities
with the community-at-large. The Coalition is open to
anyone and can be reached through the Compton House
Community Services Center, 1504 Compton Ave., Nashville,
Tennessee, 37212 or by phoning (615) 383-4106.
