Honesty, At Last
How many times in recent
years have we heard about our
government demanding that
Japan open up markets to the
U.S.? Each time, remember,
after a meeting with the
Japanese, our president would
announce victory and say Japan
was opening up. Then, later,
we learned it was all a lie. We
have criticized President
Clinton many times. This
time we want to praise him.
He tried to get Japan to sign an
agreement opening Japanese
markets to the U.S. before his
meeting with Japan's prime
minister. No agreement was
reached. Instead of lying and
telling us Japan was going to
cooperate, President Clinton
said no progress had been made
and that it was better to admit
deadlock than to announce an
agreement that did not
exist...in other words, he
refused to lie to us. Thank
you, Mr. President. It's so
refreshing.
