Green, from 1A
the betterment of the town.
In other avenues, through the
Kiwanis Club, for example, Yates
served Perry with distinction. In
1969 he received the Kiwanis Man
of the Year award (an honor shared
with Nannette who was also elected
Perry’s Woman of the Year.) In
1980 he was the first recipient of
the Seabie Hickson Community
Service Award. A fellow
Kiwanian, Cohen Walker, writes of
his longtime friend, "Yates Green
was an institution-he wanted the
best for his community and he
worked to make it happen. He was
an exceptional citizen, a fine
churchman, the ultimate gentleman
-always smiling-always warm and
gracious. It is hard to imagine
Perry without him. He will be
greatly missed."
As a member of Perry United
Methodist Church, Yates found
other opportunities for service to
his fellowman. The Rev. Billy
Key, a former pastor there, offers
this insight, "Yates Green was a
very special man: a gentleman and
a church man. He and Nannette
have loved and supported their
church faithfully since they came to
Perry in 1944. He was a member
of the Men's Bible Class and served
on the Administrative Board. Both
as a Trustee of the church and as a
member of the Building Committee
during the remodeling of the
church, Yates has demonstrated the
kind of exceptional leadership
which brings people together. He
loved his church, and he was loved
by his church."
Marion Brown echoed his words
of praise and recalled the many
hours the Greens had supervised the
tending of the grounds and
flowerbeds of the church and
parsonage, or sent food from the
Hotel whenever there was a need.
He expressed appreciation, too, for
the times they entertained the
Methodist Choir and their families
at the hotel after special choir
performances.
Yates also served on the Board of
Directors for the Bank of Perry.
Ogden Persons remembers his
friendship, "I met Yates and
Nannette over thirty years ago when
I first came to Perry and stayed at
the new Perry Hotel. I valued his
friendship and loyalty. He was
always the same and always a
gentleman."
Employees of the Greens take
pride in the reputation of the Hotel

The Houston County Board of Com
missioners will hold a public hearing
at 10:00 a.m., March 1, 1994, at the
City Hall in Perry Georgia for the
purpose of hearing any opposition to
the closing of Rock Ford Road lo
cated approximately 1 1/4 mile east
of the Intersection and highway 26.
Houston Co. Board of Commissioners
hearts for Mr. Yates. Miss Elise
Rogers, hostess for the New Perry
Hotel for thirty-six years speaks for
them when she says simply, "We
loved him. He was a good, kind
man. His employees respected him
and considered it a privilege to work
for him."
Buddy Bell, who lived near the
Green's farm and worked part time
there, was even more emphatic
about his hunting and fishing
companion of forty years," Mr.
Yates was 100 percent Anything
he promised, you could count on
because he would do it! He cared
about all people and was kind to
everyone."
There are so many friends and
each has his own special memory
of this quiet, unassuming, gentle
man. Perhaps Billy Beckham
speaks for many as he recalls his
father's good friend. "To me Mr.
Yates was the perfect example of
how a man should live his life
dedicated to his family, his church,
his community, his friends, his
business-and thoroughly enjoying
each. He was a fine gentleman who
did more to develop and maintain
the image of Perry through his own
personal and business life than any
man I have ever known. He was a
very dear friend of my parents and
through this association, I have
known and respected him all my
life. We shall certainly miss him."
Surviving Mr. Green are his
wife Nannette, and four bothers:
Walter C. Green of Houston,
Texas, Thomas R. Green of
Atlanta, Robert H. Green of
Milledgeville and Harold Green,
Business Manager of the New Perry
Hotel.
Funeral services were held for
Mr. Green at the Perry United
Methodist Church, February 22,
1994 at 11 a.m. with Dr. Marcus
Tripp and the Rev. Billy Key
officiating. Chris Murrell was in
charge of the music. He was buried
in the Memory Hill Cemetery in
Milledgeville with graveside
services at 3 p.m. The family
suggests contributions to the
Methodist Children's Home, P.O.
Box 2525, Macon, Ga. 31297.
