Yarbrough new president of Georgia Baptist Convention By Pauline lewis Society Editor Winning by the narrow margin of 34 votes, Perry First Baptist Pastor Dr. John O. Yarbrough has become the new President of the Georgia Baptist Convention for a one-year term. The conservative Perry pastor re ceived 2,566 votes as compared to moderate pastor of Albany's First Baptist Church's Rev. James Ramsey’s 2,532 votes. The president is elected by messengers (delegates) from the churches within the state, representing 1.2 million plus Georgia Baptists. Dr. main goal for the state convention is to emphasize evangelism. "We don't really need new programs. We just need to motivate people to work with the ones we have." Yarbrough, a native of Atlanta, was licensed in 1966 and ordained in 1970. He has been married to Diane Henry Yarbrough for 25 years. They have two children- Christina, affiliated with Impressions in Perry, a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in marketing; and a son, Joseph, a student at Macon College. Asked how his new office will affect his pastorate, Yarbrough said, "It will focus a lot of attention on our church, and adds a responsibility to our church. We can be an example of a caring, evangelistic church-one of cooperation and involvement. We will be in the spotlight.
