'Read-Aloud Man 1 due at Westfield
In many homes today, the
television set has become several
things: a babysitter, an
entertainment center that includes
electronic games and in some cases,
a Surrogate parent.
! In the days before television
invaded, reading was a favorite
pasttime for children.
■ In 1979, one man decided to try
and reverse the decline in literacy in
America. From his home in
-Springfield, Mass., Jim Trelease
wrote a 30-page booklet entitled
"The Read-Aloud Handbook" and
gave copies of it to friends and
neighbors and sold a few to some
bookstores nearby. It cost him
S6OO to publish the booklet
himself.
Penguin Books discovered the
book and published it. An expectant
mother found the book and sent a
copy to syndicated columnist
Abigail Van Buren, who praised it
in her column. The rest, as they
say, is history.
On March 21, the Westfield
Schools will bring Trelease to
Perry for a free appearance at the
school's gymnatorium at 7 p.m.

Try new Purple Wave petunias
By TIM LEWIS
Special toTheT-J
For you petunia lovers, you will
be interested to know that there is a
new petunia variety on the market.
But this is not your regular every
day petunia. Purple Wave is a 1995
All-America Selection award winner
that is truly a new development in
petunias.
Before I tell you about this new
type of petunia, a little background
is in order. You see, during the
1970 s and into the 1980 s, the
petunia was the most popular
bedding plant around.
Then came the introduction of
the superior dwarfs and self
branching flower types, those high
in disease resistance and uniformity.
Soon the petunia had slipped in
popularity and impatiens had taken
the lead. For those who love
petunias, this new development is
truly welcome.
Purple Wave is different from all
other petunias in that, instead of
growing upright, the stems creep

and the public.
"The decline in American
literacy is due in large part to the
fact that two-thirds of our children
no longer want to read. No player
in the NBA was bom wanting to
play basketball. So, too, the desire
to read must be planted. It is a fact
that reading aloud to a child is the
flat along the ground. This is a true
ground cover petunia. The one
thing it won’t do is hold down
weeds the way some ground covers
do, however it is well suited for
beds, rock gardens pots and hanging
baskets.
According to the promotional
information I have received. Purple
Wave plants get very large very
quickly. The recommendations are
to plant them at least two feet
apart. They reportedly eventually
cover a 4-foot square area and more.
Purple Wave is quite free
flowering. which means it needs a
more fertile soil than o»h«
petunias. Pl;in on side-di

Chapman, told members of the
Perry Kiwanis Club that there are
exciting times ahead - the new high

budget to stay.
The dream of a regional airport

to make their pitch to Federal
Aviation Administration officials.
10 Years (March 7, 1985)
City Council members studied
two pieces of legislation approved
by the Generai Assembly during
this session, both dealing with
operation of the city.
The 50-member Perry Junior
High advanced band, under the
direction of Bill Mclntosh, attended
the Eleventh District Music

25 Years (March 5, 1970)
As of March 1, Houston County
FACS closed their Warner Robins
oldest, cheapest and most successful
method of instilling that desire.
Shooting baskets with a child
creates a basketball player; reading
to a child creates a reader," Trelease
said.
Trelease is the author of "The
New Read-Aloud Handbook" and
two anthologies of children’s
stories, "Hey! Listen to This” and
Read All About It!”
At Westfield, he will speak on
"Reading Aloud: Motivating
children to make books into friends,
not enemies.”
Trelease uses an anecdotal style
with humor and enthusiasm. While
the program is about children’s
reading, its content is aimed at an
adult audience.
He warns of the dangers of
children overdosing on television
(including Nintendo and videos) and
he offers a plan by which parents
can fend off the television attack on
children's living and learning.
Trelease is being brought to
Perry by Westfield Schools. There
is no charge. For additional
information, contact Marti Tolleson
at 987-0547 or Mary Pearson at

bloom strongly into cool weather
up until hard frost. As with any
petunia, heavy rains will disrupt the
blossoms, but within a couple of
days the plants will cover
themselves with color all over

Originating in Japan, Purple
Wave is a'seed-grown variety.
Similar cultivars exist in a range
off colors under the names Surfinia

from cuttings and thus will be more
expensive.
