located on North Avenue.

Phil Smith, who has been
principal at the facility for the
past 10 years, said an orienta
tion will be held for ninth
graders only on Aug. 24 at 7
p.m.
Breakfast begins at 7:30
a.m.
Smith asks that kids being
dropped off and picked up do
not come in front of the
school, but rather come
through the driveway that
runs on either end of the
vocational building.
The school office is open
from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

This may be changing some
what during the school year
because of the construction of a
new wing at the school.

up for new term

“One of our biggest chal
lenges this year will be provid
ing classroom space,” said
Houston County School
Superintendent Tony Hinnant.
Hinnant pointed out area
growth projections will keep
this subject on everyone’s
mind.
“We’re really going to be
keeping a focus on our acade
mic process also this year,” he
added.
Houston County public
schools open their doors to stu
dents on Aug. 25.
Two new programs to be
offered systemwide this year
are the Pre-K and breakfast
programs.
“We’ll be looking forward
to the completion of the two
middle schools this upcoming
year,” he said.
The board recently pur
chased 30 acres of land just
north of Perry.
Hinnant said that while
there are no immediate plans
for use of the land, “...we’ll be
watching our growth patterns.
The way things are going, it
won’t be long before we are
looking more closely at what
we are going to do with that
land.”

Headmaster Michael Drake
said there about 515 students
enrolled at the present.
“We have a number of new
teachers this This is

have this year,” he comment

The school'will be offering
a new credit elective in reli
gion this year. “We will have
one semester in the Old
Testament and one semester in
the New Testament.”
Mary Anne Shipley will be
teaching this course.
Several music eTectives are
also lined up to be offered this
year.
“We think this will
strengthen our high school and
middle grades,” said Drake.
The school day at Westfield
begins at 8:20 a.m. and ends at
3:10 p.m.
