do to protect yourself and your
family from the harmful effects of
excessively hot weather. Hear are
some tips from the Georgia
Emergency Management Agency.
“We are experiencing another
period of hot, dry weather. Please

He believes The American

or happening, remember to:
Slow down. Avoid strenuous
activity, but if you must, do it during
the coolest part of the day, which is
usually between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m.
Stay indoors as much as possi

ther body dehydration.
Eat small meals and eat more
often. Avoid foods that are high in pro
tein, which increase metabolic heat.
Avoid using salt tablets unless
directed to do so by a doctor.
Heat kills by pushing the
human body beyond its limits.
Under normal conditions, the
body’s internal thermostat pro
duces perspiration that evaporates
and cools the body. However, in
extreme heat and high humidity,
evaporation is slowed and the
body must work extra hard to
maintain a normal temperature.
Most heat disorders occur
because the victim has been over
exposed to heat or has overexer
cised for his or her age and physi
cal condition. Elderly people and
young children are particularly
susceptible to the effects of
extremely hot weather.
