Hathcock ready
for drug program
By EMILY JOHNSTONE
Times-Journal Staff
“This year I’ve been busier
than ever before,” said Perry Drug
Resistance Education Officer Bill
Hathcock in a recent interview.
“I’m getting ready for school.
I’m ready to jump into the
schools!” Hathcock, D.A.R.E.
instructor for five years, said.
“TTie kids graduating this year
were my first D.A.R.E. students.
I’ve probably taught about 5,000
kids and out of those I would say
that less than 100 have been here
at the police department as far as
criminal activity,” he said.
“Some high school kids now
tell me they are glad they took
D.A.R.E. because it helped them
through middle and high school,”
he added.
“I think D.A.R.E. is successful
because we go in there not as an
authority figure, but as a friend.
We can tell them what drugs will
do because we see it first hand
every day,” he said.
The president of the Georgia
D.A.R.E. Officers Association
asked Hathcock to represent the
state at the D.A.R.E. national con
vention in Houston, Texas.
He is regional director for 13
counties and serves as editor for
the Ga. D.A.R.E. Officers’
Newsletter.
“We get local support from the
Kiwanis Club, Exchange Club and
Perry Country Club,” noted
Hathcock. “Those are our three
largest local contributors.”
Local volunteers are helping to
gear up for the 1996 Ga. D.A.R.E.
Officers State Conference to be
held June 18-21 at the Georgia
National Fairgrounds and
Agricenter in Perry.
“We expect 250-300 officers
and their families to attend,” said
Hathcock. “Everybody is looking
forward to it.”
Some area volunteers include
Donna Brack, Capt. Steve Heaton,
Capt. Bill Phelps, Mayor Jim
Worrall, Danny and Julie Evans,
Bob Hendrix, Officers Eugene
Johnson and Porter Wood of
Warner Robins D.A.R.E., Jimmy
Yancey, Sheriff Johnny Bee ham,
Terry Deese and P&t McElhaney
of Peach Co. and Macon D.A.R.E.
officers.
There are 7,000 D.A.R.E. offi
cers in the United States, New
Zealand, Great Britain and the
Philippines. Russia recently began
a program in that country.
