was a 98-yard kick return for a

A grueling pre-season of prac
tice is over, a pre-season made
even more grueling by the heat
wave of the last week. Coach
Ronnie Jones says his team is
ready for the challenge.
“We lost some good people to
graduation, but we have some out
standing folks coming back,” said
Jones as he sat in his office last
Wednesday, Aug. 23,1995
week trying to get a grasp on how
the season is shaping up.
The starters lost to graduation
were outstanding, to be sure. Both
defensive ends, Andy Smith and
Lindsey Harrell, left. So did two
way starter Jere Campbell, running
back John Morton, tackles Jason
Dennard and Jake Walls and fleet
running back Michael Davis. Also
gone is kicker Alex Gambill.
There’s a nucleus there from
which to build, and Jones has a
reputation as a master at getting
the best out of a player.
Shepley is back to run the wing-
T offense for the second year and
will have big fullback Tim Allen
behind him. With Davis and
Morton gone, Brian Stains should
get the ball a lot more this year. He
carried about five times a game
last year. '

Team 'Will Open Season In Columbus Sept. 2 With Jordan High School
er to running back, and his versatil
ity will help him become an out
standing runner. Along the line,
where Campbell, Dennard and
Walls were mainstays, Jones and
his staff will be looking to returning
center Marsh Wall and guard David
Boire to help solidify the line.
Chip Giles is back for his senior
season and will fill a tackle spot.
Jones is high on sophomore Ben
Nash, who beefed up to a solid 250
pounds and will get one of the
vacant line spots.
'Mike Sheppard, who played
just defense last year, will see
playing time on offense and so will
Greg Adams. Jones says that he
must play more people both ways
this year than before, especially
early in the year/
On defense, the biggest thing
facing the coaches is to replace the
ends. It’s the same situation as a
Louis Cardinals and Jacksonville
Bulls.
Collins has made some
changes, both in coaching assign
ments and in personnel.
Gone from last year’s 4-6 team
are 18 graduating seniors and 13
others who, for one reason or
another, did not return to the team.
Collins begins his first year as a
high school head coach with a ros
ter of 47 players, 25 of them
returning from last year.
There are some coaching
year ago at this position, though,
and Jones hopes he can get the
steady play out of Chip Smith and
Tom Newberry that he got from
Smith and Harrell last year.
Filling the outside linebacker
position vacated by Campbell is
Lance Bryant. He could also see
some playing time at an offensive
guard position.
Todd Rigdon and Scott Hill
return at splint end and Brian Nash
looms as the top tight end in the
GISA as he returns for his senior
season.
Nash and Allen also return at
linebacker, and with Bryant, should
form one of the top linebacking
corps in the area. Rigdon is back at
safety and Hulbert and Staines will
also be in the secondary along with
Shepley, so there is much of experi
ence back there.
Boire will anchor the line at
changes, too, in the Collins
regime. Specifically, there’s a new
offensive coordinator to run a new
offense. Geoff Walters comes
from the Tift County staff, and
will handle the offense, which will
be primarily an I-formation.
Fans will see some multiple
offensive sets and a wide-open
type of offense. Stephens, fans
might remember, stuck strictly to
his split-back veer offense.
Luke Smith switches sides of
the line of .scrimmage, and will
nose guard with Sheppard playing
a tackle with Adams and Ben Nash
also being counted on there. Keith
Waites will get playing time at
defensive end and there are sever
al others who are making a bid.
Peach County transfer J.T. Shy
will apparently take over the kick
ing chores from Gambill, with Tim
Allen again handling the punting.
Dallas Parker will take over the
long snap duties on placements
and punts.
Jones looks for Stratford to
have another good team in region
l-AAA. First Presbyterian sand
Southland should improve.
Westfield alumnus Ricky Ellis
should also see some improvement
in his Windsor Knights, so l-AAA
should be a little more competitive
this year. Westfield’s first region
game is against Windsor at home
Oct. 6.
handle the defensive coordinator’s
chores. He w*- ;l offensive coor
dinator .or Stephens. He will
replace Bob Jones, who left for
Southeast Bulloch.
The line coaches both return,
but they, too, swap sides of the
line, with Ed Blount moving from
defense to offense and Tony Thrift
moving the opposite way.
Fans are hoping for the football
fortunes to make a dramatic turn
under Collins, who is a very hard
worker, and one who demands dis
cipline.
The offense suits the personnel
than the veer. The I-formation will
enable Collins to use the running
ability of Kiwaukee Thomas, who
moves to tailback. Sophomore
John Brewer is in at quarterback.
Brewer has a very strong arm, and
fans could see a little more passing
this year.
There are quality athletes
returning.
Thomas will be outstanding as
a runner. Fred Ragin, a big senior,
moves full time to linebacker,
where he will help to fill the void
left by the graduation of Jarvis
Stripling and Antwann Fann, two
of the top linebackers in this area
last year. Ragin will be an all-star.
Another thing is the
number of returning linemen. The
entire starting offensive lirfe that
finished the season is back, though
wholesale personnel shifts
occurred. Many of last year’s
players find themselves in differ
ent positions.
One player who will stand out
is Jamal Dean. Dean is one of the
