There will be plenty softball
crammed into the month of
September at Westfield. Second
year head coach Billy Sellers and
the Westfield Lady Hornets are
eager to get started.
The region schedule opens
Aug. 29. at the Hornets’ Nest
against Windsor. The Lady
Hornets have already played,
though, with a regular season
game earlier this week following
their annual Invitational tourna
ment last Saturday, which they
won.
The reason for all the anxiety
is simple. Sellers returns his 1994
team almost intact, losing just
one player. Windy Biggers.
Sellers is in the enviable position
of having most of his starters
back, yet the team is still a rela
tively young one and should get
better as the season goes along.
Leading the 1995 Lady
Hornets are seniors Jennifer
Smith, Ashlce McCord and Julee
Fryer. All three are returning
starters.
Smith will be a live-year
starter in the outlicid. while Fryer
will again be at first base, with
McCord bring experience to the
pitchers’ mound.
Besides Fryer in the inticld.
Sellers returns Laura Posey at
second base, Stephanie Barr at
shortstop and Mary Katherine
Walker at third base. Posey is a
freshman, but is a two-year
starter. Barr is a sophomore and
Walker is a junior.
In the outfield with Smith,
Sellers will have sophomore
Jennifer Stewart returning in left
